Apple is preparing to introduce a new smart home hub that could change how people control their connected homes, bringing Siri, security cameras, and everyday household information together on a dedicated touchscreen.
The device is expected to be unveiled at Apple’s October 13 “Welcome Home” event in New York, with a 6-inch square display that can sit on a kitchen counter or mount on a wall.
A central screen for the Apple home
The hub will reportedly run a new operating system, potentially called homeOS, with widgets, customizable clock faces, and an interface that adjusts automatically depending on how far you’re standing from the screen.
An A18 chip or newer is expected to power Apple Intelligence features, allowing Siri to handle voice requests and help manage connected accessories.
Beyond controlling lights, locks, and thermostats through Apple Home, the hub is expected to support security camera monitoring, FaceTime calls, music playback, calendars, and digital photos.
Multi-user support could make it especially useful in shared households, letting family members access personalized information and controls from the same device.
Apple is reportedly preparing two versions: a tabletop model with an integrated speaker base and a wall-mounted option.
One important limitation at launch
The hub isn’t expected to include an App Store initially, which would prevent users from installing third-party apps.
That could limit its appeal for households accustomed to using an iPad or other smart displays for a wider range of applications.
Apple also hasn’t confirmed the product’s name. HomePad, Apple Home, and HomeView have all surfaced as possibilities, although none is official.
The hub is expected to debut alongside a refreshed HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K on October 13, with Apple’s announcement anticipated around 9 a.m. Eastern.
