Apple Maps Was Winning Against Google—But Now It’s Copying Google’s Worst Idea Yet

Let’s be honest: Apple Maps has had a rocky past. When it first launched in 2012, it was an absolute mess—misdirecting users, missing entire cities, and even leading some poor souls straight into the wilderness.

For years, it was the punchline of every tech joke. But credit where it’s due: Apple has spent the last decade fixing it.

Apple Maps has quietly transformed into a genuinely solid alternative to Google Maps. It’s cleaner, faster, and, most importantly, ad-free. But now, Apple wants to throw all of that progress away.

According to a report, Apple is “giving more thought” to adding ads inside Apple Maps.

Not the banner-style ads you see on sketchy websites, but paid search results—businesses coughing up cash to appear at the top when you search for, say, “coffee” or “burgers.”

It sounds harmless at first. After all, Waze, Google Maps, and Yelp have already done it. But here’s the problem: Apple built its brand on being different.

The Slippery Slope of Apple’s Ad Creep

For years, Apple positioned itself as the champion of user experience and privacy, even throwing subtle jabs at Google for its ad-driven business model.

Yet, little by little, Apple has been sneaking ads into its ecosystem. First, the App Store search ads. Then, those annoying suggested apps that appear when you browse. And now, they want to clutter up Apple Maps, one of the last pristine corners of the iPhone experience.

Let’s be honest: This isn’t about helping users. It’s about squeezing more money out of us. Apple’s services revenue is soaring, and ads are an easy way to keep that number climbing. But at what cost?

Ads in Maps Will Make Everything Worse

Here’s what’s going to happen if Apple moves forward with this plan:

  1. Relevance will take a backseat to money
Imagine searching for “best pizza near me,” and instead of seeing the highest-rated local spots, you get Domino’s or some random pizzeria that paid its way to the top. That’s not helping users; that’s manipulating them.
  2. Navigation will feel less trustworthy
If Apple is willing to prioritize ads over accuracy in search results, what’s stopping them from subtly influencing navigation? Will “faster routes” suddenly favor businesses that have partnerships with Apple? It might sound far-fetched now, but we’ve seen how companies shift priorities once advertising money enters the equation.
  3. The overall experience will get cluttered
Apple Maps has always felt cleaner and more streamlined than Google Maps. But inject paid placements into the mix, and suddenly, it starts feeling like a corporate-sponsored maze rather than a reliable navigation tool.

A Betrayal of Apple’s Core Users

Many of us stuck with Apple Maps not just because of convenience but because we appreciated its ad-free, privacy-conscious approach.

This move would be a betrayal of that trust. If Apple truly cares about user experience, it should keep Apple Maps free from the distractions that plague other navigation apps. Let Google chase ad dollars. Apple doesn’t need to.

What Can Users Do?

Apple is still in the “thinking about it” phase, which means there’s time to push back. If enough users voice their frustration, Apple might reconsider this move.

But if they go through with it, we might have to make a tough choice: either accept a future where Apple Maps becomes yet another ad-driven platform or go back to Google Maps—even if that means handing over more data to the search giant.

Either way, Apple is dangerously close to undoing years of hard-earned goodwill. And for what? A few extra billion in ad revenue? Apple, don’t do this. You were finally getting it right.

Do you trust Apple to keep Maps fair, or will ads ruin it like they did with Google? Let’s debate—should Apple keep Maps ad-free?
