iOS 27 Finally Gives HomePod an Apple Music Feature Many Users Say Is Hard to Live Without Once You Try It

When Apple introduced AutoMix for Apple Music, it immediately felt like one of those features that made playlists sound a little more polished without requiring any effort from the listener.

The strange part was where it didn’t work. You could use AutoMix on an iPhone or iPad, but not on a HomePod, which is arguably the Apple device most likely to play music in the background for hours.

If you wanted those smoother transitions through a HomePod, you had to start playback from another device and stream it over AirPlay.

With HomePod Software 27, that workaround is finally gone. AutoMix is coming directly to HomePod, allowing Apple’s smart speaker to handle transitions between songs on its own.

Instead of relying solely on a traditional crossfade, AutoMix looks at factors such as tempo and musical structure to create transitions that feel more intentional.

I’m not someone who notices every audio tweak Apple makes, but this is one of those features that becomes obvious after you’ve listened to it for a while.

Going back to standard transitions can make playlists feel a little more abrupt, especially during longer listening sessions.

What’s also worth noting is that Apple has continued refining AutoMix as part of its latest software updates. So, HomePod users are getting the newer implementation that Apple is rolling out across its music ecosystem.

The HomePod has always been at its best when you can start music and forget about the technology entirely.

The less it depends on another device, the better the experience tends to be. AutoMix running natively fits that philosophy much better than requiring an iPhone or iPad somewhere in the chain.

There’s also good news for people still holding onto the original HomePod. Apple has confirmed support for HomePod Software 27 on the first-generation model, meaning this feature isn’t limited to newer hardware.

HomePod Software 27 is currently in beta and is expected to launch publicly this fall alongside Apple’s other major software releases.
