I Tried Apple’s Secret Voice Control in My Car—Now I’ll Never Use Siri the Same Way Again

If you’ve ever sat there yelling “Play Taylor Swift” into the void while Siri fumbles through your entire playlist history, you’re not alone.

That’s why I’ve been quietly testing out something tucked deep in your iPhone’s Accessibility settings. It might just change how you drive: Voice Control inside CarPlay.

No, not Siri. I’m talking about Voice Control, a separate feature that gives you full hands-free command of your CarPlay screen.

It’s been around for years, but only recently clicked for me. Once I figured it out, I stopped touching the display altogether while driving.

You can enable it inside CarPlay by heading to Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control. When it’s on, a tiny mic icon appears on your CarPlay sidebar, letting you know it’s listening.

From there, the magic starts. Say “Open Music”, “Tap Library”, “Tap Shuffle”, and your iPhone will follow along like it’s reading your mind, no need to wrestle with Siri’s occasional confusion over playlists or artists.

I’ve even used commands like “Scroll down”, “Tap third” (when buttons aren’t labeled), or “Pan left” in Maps to shift the view without lifting a finger.

What surprised me most was how natural it felt. I found myself saying quick back-to-back commands like “Open Messages” > half-second pause > “Tap Mom.”

On long drives, I can shuffle music, reroute Maps, and respond to texts without ever touching the screen.

Apple doesn’t really advertise this feature, which blows my mind. If you care about safety, hate clunky voice assistants, or just want to feel like you’re driving a spaceship, turn on Voice Control and give it a shot. It might just be the best Apple feature you’re not using.
