When Apple releases a new iOS update, most of us skim through the flashy headlines, update our phones, and move on with our lives.

But iOS 18.3 quietly hides some of the most useful features you’ve never heard of. And if you’re like me, you’ll kick yourself for not discovering them sooner.

The real magic of iOS updates often lies in the small, under-the-radar tweaks. After spending a week exploring iOS 18.3, I’ve uncovered a handful of settings that have completely changed how I use my iPhone.

Let me show you what you’ve been missing.

Loop Videos

Remember those looping Boomerang videos on Instagram? Apple has brought that same magic to your Photos app with the Loop Videos feature.

Here’s how it works: when you enable this setting, any video you play in the Photos app will loop continuously instead of stopping abruptly at the end.

It’s perfect for those short, fun clips you want to watch on repeat—like your dog chasing its tail or your toddler’s first steps.

I stumbled upon this feature while scrolling through old vacation videos, and it instantly made the experience more immersive. It’s a small change but adds a playful, nostalgic touch to your memories.

Type to Siri

Siri has always been a bit of a hit-or-miss feature for me. Sometimes, it works flawlessly; other times, it feels like I’m yelling into the void. However, with iOS 18.3, Apple has introduced a game-changer: Type to Siri.

You don’t have to choose between talking to Siri or typing your requests. You can do both—simultaneously.

I’ve been using this feature in meetings where speaking out loud would be awkward, and it’s been a lifesaver. Just double-tap the Siri button, type your request, and voilà—Siri gets it done without a peep.

Always Show Volume Controls

Here’s a pet peeve of mine: trying to adjust the volume on my lock screen and realizing I can only use the physical buttons. iOS 18.3 fixes this with the Always Show Volume Controls setting.

Here’s how to turn it on:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Under the Hearing tab, select “Audio & Visual”
  4. Turn on “Always Show Volume Control”

When enabled, this adds a volume slider to your lock screen, making it easier to fine-tune your audio without unlocking your phone.

It’s a small change, but it’s one of those quality-of-life improvements that makes you wonder how you ever lived without it.

Stereo/Mono Audio Playback

If you’re someone who records a lot of videos, this one’s for you. iOS 18.3 introduces a new setting under Camera called Record Sound, which lets you switch between “Stereo” and “Mono” audio playback.

You can now enable Audio Playback during video recordings. Your music or podcast won’t stop playing when you hit record.

I tested this during a workout, and it was a game-changer—no more awkward pauses in my playlist just because I wanted to capture a quick clip.

Gen Emoji

If you’re an iMessage power user, you’ll love this one. iOS 18.3 makes it easier than ever to create custom emojis with the Gen Emoji feature.

Here’s the trick: tap the plus button in iMessage, and you’ll find the option to generate custom emojis.

The first time I tried it, I created a pizza emoji with sunglasses—because why not? It’s fun and creative and adds a personal touch to your messages.

Pro tip: Move the Gen Emoji shortcut to the top of your menu for quick access. Trust me, once you start using it, you’ll wonder how you ever settled for the standard emoji keyboard.

Volume Limit

This one’s for the parents out there—or anyone who’s ever handed their phone to a friend who likes to blast music at full volume. iOS 18.3 introduces a Volume Limit setting under Sounds & Haptics.

You can set a cap on your phone’s maximum volume, anywhere from 20% to 90%. I set mine to 80%, and it’s been a great way to protect my ears and speakers. Plus, it’s a subtle reminder to keep the noise level in check when I’m in public.

The Takeaway

iOS 18.3 might not have the flashiest new features, but it’s packed with hidden gems that can seriously upgrade your iPhone experience.

From looping videos to custom emojis, these settings prove that sometimes, the best things come in small packages.

So, take a few minutes to explore your settings. You might just find a feature that changes how you use your phone—or at least makes you smile.

Now, go ahead and share this with your friends. Because let’s be honest: everyone loves discovering a hidden feature they didn’t know existed.
