I’ve been using the iPhone for over a decade, and every year, one iOS feature quietly slips in and ends up changing how I use my phone every day.
In iOS 18.4, that feature is the new Messages shortcut in the Shortcuts app—and I’m honestly kind of obsessed with it.
At first glance, it doesn’t seem like a big deal. It’s just an “Open Conversation” action that lets you jump straight into a specific Messages thread.
But once I set it up and started using it, it hit me: This is what speed feels like. No more swiping around the Messages app trying to find that one chat with my wife or my editor buried under a flood of texts. One tap, and I’m in.

What takes this from useful to essential is how customizable it is. You can drop the shortcut anywhere—your Home Screen, Lock Screen, Control Center, or even the Action button if you’re using a 15 Pro.
You can even turn it into a cute little app icon using the contact’s photo. It’s fast, it’s clean, and it feels like it should’ve been part of iOS years ago.
I’ve now created shortcuts for my most important chats: my wife, my group thread with close friends, and a few work contacts.
I threw them into a widget stack on my Home Screen, and suddenly, I feel like I’ve cut my daily phone tapping in half.

It’s easy to overlook small updates like this one, but Apple really nailed the execution. Sometimes the best features aren’t the flashy ones—they’re the ones that quietly streamline your day.
If you haven’t set up a Messages shortcut yet, give it five minutes—you’ll wonder how you ever texted without it.
