We’ve all been there. You’re in the middle of downloading a massive app update, maybe a game, maybe an important work tool, when suddenly, your Wi-Fi slows to a crawl.
Or worse, you realize you’re about to step out the door and switch to cellular data.
Until now, you had two choices: let the download continue and hope for the best, or cancel it entirely and start from scratch later.
Apple just fixed that.
With iOS 18.4, Apple has finally added a feature that should have been here years ago: the ability to pause and resume app downloads and updates.

It’s such a simple, obvious change that I had to do a double take when I first saw it in action.
And yet, it’s one of those quality-of-life improvements that will make using your iPhone just a little smoother every day.
Some users might think this feature already existed, but previously, you could only pause downloads from the Home Screen by long-pressing the app icon.
With iOS 18.4, Apple has added a dedicated pause button directly in the App Store’s download interface, making it more accessible and intuitive.
You don’t have to leave the App Store or fiddle with your Home Screen to manage downloads.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
At first glance, pausing a download might not seem like a big deal. But think about all the moments when this could save you from frustration.
You’re on a spotty train connection, downloading an update for your favorite app. The download slows to a crawl, and you’re stuck watching that tiny progress circle inch forward.
You can pause the download and resume with a single tap when you’re back on a stable connection.
Or imagine you’re updating a huge game, one of those 5GB behemoths, and realize you need to jump on a video call.
Instead of letting the update hog all your bandwidth, you can pause it and pick up where you left off later. No more wasted time, no more data surprises.

A Small Feature With a Big Impact
This update reminds me of Apple’s approach to software design polished, thoughtful, and sometimes late to the party.
Android users have had this feature for years, but Apple isn’t about being first; it’s about getting it right. And in typical Apple fashion, the implementation is seamless.
You don’t need to dig into menus or settings to find it. Just tap the download progress icon on the App Store, and you’ll see a new pause button.
When you’re ready, tap again to resume. That’s it. Simple, intuitive, and incredibly useful.
