One of my favorite features coming to iOS 18 is something that’s been oddly missing from iPhones for years: the ability to pause a video while recording.
If you’ve ever had to record multiple clips back-to-back, you know how frustrating it can be to stop and start all over again. With iOS 18, Apple’s finally fixing that.
Here’s how it works. When you start recording a video, a new pause button will appear on the left side of the screen.
This allows you to temporarily stop recording, adjust your framing, and then resume shooting without creating a new video file.

You can also switch between lenses while the video is paused. So, if you want to switch from a wide-angle shot to a zoomed-in close-up instantly, iOS 18 lets you do this cinematic trick without breaking a sweat.

This small tweak is one of those features that seems so simple that you wonder why it wasn’t always there.
This will make people’s lives way easier, especially for creators or anyone who wants to capture moments more fluidly.
Apple quietly introduced this feature to developers and beta testers in the iOS 18 release candidate. Still, it’s safe to assume it’ll be baked into the final release, which drops on September 16.
For those who, like me, enjoy capturing moments in bits and pieces—whether it’s your kid’s first steps or a funny dog trick—you’ll no longer need to fiddle with multiple files.
The best part is that you don’t have to buy the new iPhone 16 to enjoy this cool feature. As long as you have an iPhone compatible with iOS 18, this feature will be baked into the camera app.
What are your thoughts on Apple finally adding a pause button to the Camera app? How do you think this new feature will make recording videos easier?
