After years of waiting, Apple has finally brought T9 dialing support to the iPhone with iOS 18, a feature Android users have long enjoyed.
This addition has made calling contacts directly from the keypad easier than ever. So, if you’re nostalgic for the days of texting on flip phones or just looking for a quicker way to dial, you’re in for a treat.
T9 dialing, short for “Text on 9 keys,” was once the go-to method for typing on old-school mobile phones.
Each number key (2-9) represented multiple letters, with “2” covering ABC, “3” for DEF, and so on. It was originally designed for faster texting, but its simplicity also makes it great for quick dialing.
Okay, I know what you’re thinking: Why not just ask Siri to make the call?
While Siri is convenient, it’s not always reliable, especially in noisy places or when discretion is needed. T9 dialing in iOS 18 gives you the speed and precision Siri sometimes lacks.
Whether in a meeting, riding the subway, or having spotty internet, T9 dialing ensures you can quickly find and call contacts without frustration.
How to Use T9 Dialing on iPhone
To use T9 dialing on your iPhone with iOS 18, follow these steps:
- Open the Phone app
- Tap the keypad tab, then start typing the contact’s name using the corresponding number keys.
For example, if you want to call “Dad,” you’d press 3-2-3. As you type, the matching contact will appear above the keypad.

If there are multiple matches, you can tap “X more…” beneath the result to view the additional options.
Simply tap the person’s name, and their phone number will appear. Then, hit the green call button to make the call.
In addition to T9 dialing, iOS 18 has introduced a search field in your recent calls list, which lets you quickly find past calls by typing in a name or number.
