Apple Mail has never been particularly good at finding old emails. You could type words you knew were in a message and still end up scrolling through irrelevant results or wondering whether Mail had indexed it at all.
iOS 27 finally makes search considerably more useful. I’ve been testing the new system for several months, and finding older messages that previously required several searches now often works on the first try.
The improvement comes from a new ranking system that looks beyond the exact words you type.
Mail can now search by what you mean
Apple says the new system brings the most relevant results to the top, even when the email you’re looking for is buried deep in your inbox.
The first time you use search after updating, Mail displays an “Expanded Search Results” banner explaining that it can find messages “based on what you mean, not just the words you type.”
That makes a noticeable difference when you remember what an email was about but can’t remember the exact subject line or wording.
Instead of relying primarily on literal keyword matches, Mail can interpret the meaning of your search and use that to find related messages. Results are also ranked so the emails Mail considers most relevant appear first rather than simply being presented as a loosely ordered collection of matches.
In my testing, this has fixed one of my biggest frustrations with the app. Searches that previously returned unrelated messages or failed to surface an email I knew existed have been considerably more reliable in iOS 27.
Give Mail time to index after updating
The improved search may not work at full strength immediately after installing iOS 27.
Mail and Siri need time to index information on your iPhone, particularly after a major software update. If that process is still running, searches can be incomplete even with the new system.
You can check Settings for an “Optimizing Search and Siri” message to see whether your iPhone is still processing its search index.
Once indexing finished on my devices, the difference from iOS 26 became much easier to see. I’ve been able to find older emails more consistently without repeatedly changing search terms to coax the right message out of Mail.
Search was one of the reasons I regularly ended up going back to Gmail when Mail couldn’t find something I needed. With iOS 27, I’m doing that considerably less often.
There are still plenty of things I’d like Apple to improve in Mail, including Gmail push notifications and better attachment handling.
But search was one of its most frustrating weaknesses, and iOS 27 finally makes it feel dependable enough that I don’t immediately reach for another app when I need to find an old email.
