Apple is fixing one of the most persistent annoyances in everyday iPhone use with iOS 27: the frustrating connectivity gap that occurs when a phone moves between a Wi-Fi network and cellular data.
Anyone who has walked out the front door only to find their iPhone clinging to a home Wi-Fi signal it can no longer actually use knows the problem well.
The phone can stay locked onto a wireless network even as the signal fades, leaving it stuck between a weak Wi-Fi connection and cellular service.
That creates a temporary dead zone that can last several seconds, enough to interrupt navigation, drop a Wi-Fi call, or leave a message stuck mid-send.
Until now, the usual workaround has been to open Control Center and manually turn off Wi-Fi, forcing the iPhone to switch to cellular.
It works, but it requires the user to notice the problem, recognize what caused it, and take action every time it happens.
Apple addresses the transition delay in iOS 27
With iOS 27, Apple says that gap is closing. The company specifically flagged network switching as one of the platform-level improvements in the new release, stating that “moving between cellular and Wi-Fi networks is more seamless than ever.”
The underlying change makes the iPhone smarter about detecting when a Wi-Fi connection has degraded to the point where cellular would serve better, and switching over without waiting for the user to intervene.
The improvement falls under a broader push Apple described as making iOS 27 “more responsive, reliable, and delightful,” with the company listing around 30 distinct speed and performance upgrades across the system.
Network transitions are one of the few areas Apple called out by name, which suggests the fix required meaningful work at the software level rather than a minor tuning adjustment.

Early beta testing looks encouraging
Hands-on testing during the iOS 27 beta period has been encouraging. After several months on the beta, the manual Wi-Fi toggle workaround has not been necessary, with connections staying solid across the Wi-Fi-to-cellular boundary.
Of course, real-world results across millions of devices and an enormous range of network environments will ultimately determine how well the fix holds up.
Network conditions vary considerably depending on carrier, location, router hardware, and how quickly a user moves away from a known Wi-Fi access point.
iOS 27 is expected to ship to all compatible iPhones this fall alongside new iPhone hardware, following the standard release pattern Apple has used for years.
