Apple’s iPhone 17 is Here With a 120Hz Display and Camera Tricks That Could Change How You Take Photos

Apple just unveiled the iPhone 17, and it’s a mix of familiar design and meaningful upgrades that push the standard iPhone closer to Pro-level performance.

The biggest change you’ll notice immediately is the display: it’s now 6.3 inches, slightly larger than last year, with an adaptive 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate.

That means smoother scrolling and more responsive animations, a feature that used to be exclusive to the Pro line.

Apple says it can hit 3,000 nits of peak brightness, making it the brightest iPhone screen ever, and the new ceramic shield 2 coating is three times more scratch-resistant.

Design-wise, the iPhone 17 looks a lot like the iPhone 16. There are subtle new colors: black, lavender, blue, green, and white, and the rear camera bar stays vertical, unlike the Pro and Air models that switched to a horizontal layout.

But the camera system is where Apple really flexed. The rear features a 48-megapixel “dual fusion” camera that combines main and telephoto functions into one sensor.

You also get a 24-megapixel default for smaller files, a 2x optical-quality telephoto, and a 48-megapixel ultrawide that Apple claims captures four times the resolution of last year’s ultrawide.

The front camera has been upgraded too. The new 18-megapixel Center Stage sensor is twice the size of the previous one, and its square shape makes landscape selfies practical without turning the phone. You can switch between portrait and landscape modes directly in the Camera app.

Under the hood, the iPhone 17 runs on Apple’s A19 chip built on 3-nanometer technology.

It has a six-core CPU and five-core GPU, delivering faster performance across the board and supporting on-device AI. Battery life is rated for all-day use, with up to 30 hours of video playback, eight hours more than the iPhone 16.

Networking is handled by Apple’s new N1 chip, which brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, replacing Broadcom components.

Storage starts at 256GB, up from 128GB last year, and pricing begins at $799. Preorders start September 12th, with availability on September 19th.

Apple isn’t offering a larger “Plus” version for this generation, so if you’re looking for a bigger screen, you’ll need to consider the Pro Max or Air.

The iPhone 17 is a clear upgrade for anyone who skipped the last generation or wants a more advanced camera and display without paying for the Pro model.
