Apple usually reserves its best hardware for the Pro Max. But this year, U.S. buyers may find one surprising exception inside the iPhone 18 lineup: the modem.
Apple’s technical specifications explicitly list its new C2 modem for the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro, while the $1,299 Pro Max makes no mention of it for U.S. models.
That omission alone could be an error. But Apple’s announcement makes the same distinction, saying the “iPhone 18 Pro introduces C2,” with no corresponding mention of the modem for the Pro Max.
The cellular specs tell the same story
Another clue is the supported LTE bands. The U.S. iPhone 18 Pro includes Band 106, while the Pro Max does not.
That difference points to separate modem hardware rather than a missing line on Apple’s website. It also fits with pre-launch reports that Qualcomm modems would remain in some iPhone 18 models. The U.S. Pro Max appears to be one of them.
The split seems limited to the United States. Apple’s international specifications list C2 for both Pro models.
Apple hasn’t explained why the American Pro Max is different. Supply could be one factor, especially since C2 also powers the new iPhone Duo and draws from the same production pool.
What it means for Pro Max buyers
Apple says C2 improves on the C1X with better performance and efficiency while supporting both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G.
It also uses AI-powered technology designed to improve call quality and data reliability when signal conditions deteriorate.
That doesn’t necessarily put the Pro Max at a disadvantage. Qualcomm’s modem could match or even outperform C2 in some situations, something that won’t be clear until the phones undergo real-world testing.
Still, it’s an unusual tradeoff. The Pro Max normally takes what Apple offers in the smaller Pro and adds to it. This year, American buyers paying $100 more appear to get a different cellular chip instead of Apple’s newest one.
