Apple’s next iPhone Air could be even thinner than the original while packing a significantly larger battery, potentially addressing one of the biggest complaints about its ultra-slim design.
New details suggest the iPhone Air 2 will measure just 5.2mm thick, down from the current model’s 5.6mm, while increasing battery capacity from 3,149mAh to 3,500mAh.
That would make the new Air roughly 7% thinner while giving it about 11% more battery capacity, an unusual combination for a smartphone already designed around minimizing thickness.
A Bigger Battery in Less Space
The original iPhone Air pushed Apple’s thin-and-light design further than any previous iPhone, but its compact battery has been a sticking point for buyers who prioritize endurance.
The rumored 3,500mAh battery could help improve that situation, although actual battery life will also depend on the processor, display, modem, and other components.
Fitting a larger battery into a thinner phone would likely require higher-density battery technology or more efficient use of the available internal space.
At 5.2mm, the iPhone Air 2 would also match the thickness of the iPhone Duo when unfolded, making it one of the thinnest smartphones Apple has ever designed.
An Early 2027 Launch?
The iPhone Air 2 is expected to arrive in early 2027, potentially alongside the iPhone 18e rather than the main iPhone 18 lineup.
That would give Apple a separate launch window for its ultra-thin model, although the company hasn’t confirmed its release plans.
For now, the specifications come from a single unverified source, so both the thickness and battery capacity could change before launch.
