Accidental taps and missed selections can make using the iPhone a frustrating experience for people with motor skill impairments.

Luckily, Apple’s iOS operating system packs powerful accessibility features designed to make using your device easier than ever.

Hidden within the Settings app, these tools can transform your daily interaction with your phone, helping you overcome dexterity limitations and get the most out of your technology.

In this story, we’ll show you how these features make using your iPhone touchscreen much more comfortable and much less frustrating.

How to Set Up Haptic Touch on iPhone

While the Haptic Touch feature is available on recent iPhones, users have different preferences and needs regarding haptic sensitivity.

This iPhone accessibility feature helps with touchscreen interactions. You can adjust how the screen responds to taps, swipes, and long presses.

It can be set to recognize slower or faster touches and prevent the phone from registering accidental multiple taps caused by tremors or dexterity issues.

These settings can be customized with the following steps.

1. Navigate to your iPhone’s Settings and select the Accessibility tab.

2. Choose Touch.

3. Select Touch Accommodations.

4. Toggle the Touch Accommodations on.

5. Turn Hold Duration on and tap OK from the pop-up. Use the + and keys to increase or decrease the duration of touches, respectively.

6. Toggle Ignore Repeat on, and use the + and to adjust the time allowed between multiple touches.

7. Toggle Swipe Gestures on to increase or decrease the amount of required movement needed before the iPhone recognizes something as a screen swipe.

Tap Assistance

iPhone users with dexterity challenges often struggle to perform precise taps on their devices, often unintentionally swiping instead.

Enabling tap assistance simplifies this by interpreting any single-finger gesture as a tap. There are two options: use either the initial or final touch location as the designated tap point.

For some users, their initial finger placement may be closest to their intended tap location. Others find it easier to adjust their finger’s position after touching the screen, sliding it to where they want to tap before lifting it off to execute the tap.

Additional Haptic Settings

You can set haptic actions to trigger additional actions or content previews. You can find these in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Haptic Touch.

Here, you can set the duration for a response speed. You can then test these new settings on your screen and adjust them accordingly until you find the one that best suits your needs.

Some iPhone models allow a tap on the screen to wake the phone. In the same Touch section of the Accessibility Settings, you can turn this feature off by toggling Tap or Swipe to Wake to the off position.

Similarly, you can turn off the iPhone’s Shake to Undo option in the same Touch section.

Wrap Up

Apple continues to demonstrate excellence in accessibility and inclusive design. This focus on inclusivity positions them as a leader in catering to people with various needs, including those who experience hand tremors or have reduced dexterity due to aging.
