Apple has redesigned the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, making it physically smaller while expanding its capabilities to display three Live Activities at once, up from the previous maximum of two.
The change means users running simultaneous background tasks, such as tracking a sports score, monitoring a food delivery, and timing a workout, can now see all three at a glance from the top of the display without unlocking the phone or switching apps.
Previously, the Dynamic Island capped out at two concurrent Live Activities, requiring users to tap through to access a third.
A Smaller Footprint, More Information
Apple introduced the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022 to repurpose the front camera cutout into a functional display area.
Apple has incrementally expanded what it can show over successive software releases, but the hardware itself remained largely unchanged until now.
The redesigned version on the iPhone 18 Pro occupies less screen space, which becomes more valuable as Apple fits more information into it.
What Changes for Everyday Use
Live Activities are the persistent, real-time updates that apps push to the Dynamic Island and the Lock Screen, covering things like ride-hailing pickups, flight countdowns, game scores, and timer progress.
The two-activity cap had become a practical constraint as more third-party apps adopted the feature. With three now supported on iPhone 18 Pro models, developers can keep their apps visible even when users juggle more concurrent tasks.
Whether the three-activity limit extends to non-Pro iPhone 18 models has not been confirmed. The Dynamic Island hardware changes announced so far apply specifically to the Pro lineup.
The iPhone 18 Pro will be available to pre-order after the event, with broader availability expected in the coming weeks alongside iOS 27, which includes additional Apple Intelligence and Siri updates.
