If you’ve ever sent an audio message through iMessage, you’ve probably had this moment: You’re halfway through recording, and suddenly your brain goes, “Wait! I forgot to say something.”
Or worse, you fumble a word and assume you have to delete the whole thing and start from scratch.
Don’t. Seriously—don’t hit delete.
A simple iPhone trick has been hiding in plain sight, and it’ll change how you use voice messages.
That little “+” button next to the message duration? You can tap it after you gather your thoughts and add more. And you can keep tapping it to add as many segments as you want, all before hitting the blue arrow send button.

There is no need to rush or redo the whole thing. Just tap that little “+” button and pick up where you left off.
Here’s how it works:

- Open a message thread or start a new one, tap the “+” button on the right, and select audio from the pop-up menu to start recording your voice.
- If you mess up or forget something, tap the little “+” icon next to the message duration and keep recording.
- Repeat this as many times as you need. Only hit Send when you’re totally satisfied.
- Changed your mind? Tap the “X” on the far left to delete the message.
Also: Apple just improved the iPhone Calculator in a way you might not have expected—but it’s brilliant
I started using this feature to send voice updates to friends while multitasking. I’d stop recording, realize I left out a key detail, and instead of sighing and scrapping the whole thing, I’d tap “+” and keep going. Finally, it felt like the voice version of editing a text before sending.
With the “+” trick, voice messages on iPhone go from frustrating to brilliant. Now you can stop deleting and start speaking your mind, at your own pace.
