Microsoft Is Finally Letting Apple Users Skip One of the Most Irritating Parts of Setting Up Edge on a Mac or Windows PC

Microsoft is adding Apple Account sign-in to its Edge browser, letting users set up a profile without creating or using a Microsoft account.

The feature was spotted in the latest Edge Canary build by MacMagazine and is also rolling out to Edge Beta users on both Windows and macOS.

What’s Changing

Two flags tied to the feature appeared in the Canary build. One enables Apple Account sign-in for Edge profiles while the other adds an Apple sign-in button to the profile menu, which already offers a Google Account option.

For Apple users who have resisted Edge because it required a Microsoft account, the update removes that friction point.

Microsoft’s release notes for Edge Beta 152 confirm the feature is coming to both platforms, though the company describes it as a “controlled rollout,” meaning it may not appear for all beta users immediately. There’s no word yet on when it reaches the stable channel.

Why Edge, and Why Now

Edge holds roughly 5.2 percent of global browser usage, well behind Chrome at nearly 70 percent and Safari at about 15 percent, according to recent web analytics data.

On the Mac specifically, Edge competes against Safari’s tight system integration and Chrome’s entrenched user base.

Adding Apple Account support is a small but deliberate move to reduce sign-up friction for iPhone and Mac users who might otherwise skip the browser entirely.

The browser has attracted a niche following among Mac users who prefer it as a Chromium-based alternative with fewer Google integrations baked in.

Vertical tabs and smoother compatibility with corporate single sign-on could make Edge a compelling alternative to Safari or Firefox, even if it remains a minority choice on Apple hardware.

Apple Account sign-in, which Apple originally launched as “Sign in with Apple,” lets users authenticate with apps and services using their existing Apple credentials, with the option to mask their real email address.

Bringing that option to Edge profiles puts Microsoft’s browser in line with the convenience Apple users already expect from third-party apps on iPhone and Mac.

Microsoft has not announced a timeline for the stable release beyond confirming the controlled beta rollout is underway.
