Apple is heading into its biggest fall iPhone launch in years without a standard iPhone 18.
Multiple reports indicate that Apple has pushed the base iPhone 18 and second-generation iPhone Air to early 2027, leaving three new models for this fall: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a new iPhone Ultra.
That changes the role of the iPhone 18 Pro. Instead of sitting between the standard iPhone and Pro Max as it has in previous generations, it becomes the least expensive new iPhone Apple launches this fall.
The Pro becomes the default
For most of the past decade, Apple’s fall lineup has included a standard iPhone that serves as the starting point for buyers who want the latest model without paying Pro prices.
That option disappears this year. Buyers who want a new iPhone in September will have to choose between the iPhone 18 Pro and more expensive models, or stick with an older generation until the standard iPhone 18 arrives.
Apple will still have cheaper options. The iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air will remain available, but none will be the newest generation when Apple’s fall marketing campaign begins.
The iPhone Ultra sits at the other end of the lineup. With a price expected to exceed $2,000, it will target a much smaller group of buyers. That leaves the iPhone 18 Pro as the obvious starting point for anyone who wants Apple’s latest hardware.

The price could make that harder
The timing also comes as Apple’s component costs are rising. TrendForce estimates that the iPhone 18 Pro’s bill of materials could be 38 percent higher than the previous generation, with higher memory costs accounting for much of the increase.
If those costs translate into a starting price of $1,199 or more, Apple would be asking some buyers to pay Pro prices for the first time simply because there is no standard iPhone 18 available this fall.
That could change upgrade decisions. Someone using an iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 who would normally move to the standard model may instead keep their current phone for another year, buy an older model, or spend more on the Pro.
Apple is moving the lineup upmarket
The strategy gives Apple a clear opportunity to push more customers toward the Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to receive several major upgrades planned for this generation, giving Apple plenty to promote at the September launch.
The question is whether those upgrades will be enough to offset the higher entry price. Apple has used the Pro models as its premium growth engine for years, but this fall will be different. For the first time in the modern iPhone lineup, the latest generation won’t have a standard model at all.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Ultra in September, with availability following shortly.
