How to Delete Your Private Data From This Website (to Prevent Identity Theft, Stalking, and Harassing)

Gotechtor's Editorial Guidelines

We’ve all seen those “People Search” websites. They promise to find all sorts of personal details—phone numbers, addresses, even relatives.

But most people really don’t care because they’re paid tools, which can sometimes be unreliable.

You might spend money and still not find the information you need. This can be frustrating and make you hesitant to use them again.

But we’ve found a surprisingly accurate website that is completely free and lets you find anyone’s public information.

The site is FamilyTreeNow.com. Get ready to be shocked. Do a quick search, and you might be surprised to see details like past and present addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and even your age and relatives.

All that information is readily accessible to anyone with an internet connection for free.

Here’s How It Works

To find someone’s phone number, knowing their full name is a good start.

Even better, knowing the state and city they live in (currently or previously) narrows down the search results significantly, making it much easier to locate their information.

Select the record details of the person you’re looking for from the results.

If you entered limited details in your search and received a large number of results, you can refine your search using the filters on the left side of the screen.

These filters allow you to select specific record types:

  • All Records: This shows all available record types for your search.
  • Census Records: Narrow results to only census records.
  • Death Records: This filter shows only death certificates or related records.
  • Living People: Focuses results on people who are likely still alive.
  • Public Member Trees: This filter shows results from family tree users have chosen to make public.

You’ll see a detailed report of the person’s birthdate, current and past addresses, phone numbers, and possible relatives.

If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, you can also find their email addresses.

How Is This Legal?

Now, you might wonder how this is even legal. Doesn’t it pose a personal security or privacy issue?

Indeed, it’s disturbing and could potentially put people in danger (domestic violence victims, possible stalking, etc.)

However, it’s totally legal, and according to the FTC, there are no laws that prevent companies from publishing this kind of details.

These companies get the information from publicly available sources, including:

  • Property records
  • Driving records
  • Voter registration information
  • Criminal records, civil actions, and judgments
  • Birth, marriage, divorce, and death records
  • Professional licenses, like those for pilots, doctors, lawyers, or architects

They know where to search and how to compile the data, presenting it in a user-friendly format that makes finding what you’re looking for very easy.

Can I Opt Out?

If you’re concerned about your information on FamilyTreeNow.com, you can opt out of their records, although it might take a few tries if they have multiple profiles for you.

The site offers a straightforward opt-out process. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Click the opt-out link.
  2. Enter your email address.
  3. Verify you’re human by clicking the “I’m human” captcha box.
  4. Click the button labeled “Begin Opt Out Procedure” to complete the process.

Next, look yourself up. Once you’ve accessed your record (ensuring it’s yours and not someone with a similar name), click the red “Opt Out This Record” button. That’s all there is to it!

You’ll receive an email confirmation shortly after. According to FamilyTreeNow, it can take up to 48 hours for your record to be removed.

Are There Other Similar Websites Out There?

Unfortunately, yes. There are tons of “people search” websites that collect and sell your information. It’d be a time-consuming process to opt out of each one.

Also, opting out isn’t a one-time fix. You’d need to periodically check to see if any new information about yourself reappears, and if that happens, you’d need to submit a new opt-out request.

Or you could use a paid service like DeleteMe or Kanary to opt out of these sites, but they can be expensive.

Some charge a one-time fee, while others require a monthly or yearly subscription, which might not be feasible for everyone.
