Gotechtor's Editorial Guidelines

There’s nothing more frustrating when your Android phone is connected to Wi-Fi but has no internet connection. When that happens you can’t stream music, watch movies, or watch sports live streams on the internet.

There are a couple of reasons why this may happen, which we’ll go through below. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy problem to fix, providing you know what to look for.

We’ll go through all the possible reasons why your Android phone can’t connect to the internet and how to fix this problem.

  1. Restart the Router
  2. Turn Off Mobile Data
  3. Date & Time Settings
  4. Forget and rejoin Wi-Fi Network
  5. Change Router Wireless Mode
  6. Reset Network Settings
  7. Change DNS

Reasons Why Android Is Connected to Wi-Fi, But Has No Internet Connection

There are a number of reasons why your Android phone may not have an internet connection while connected to Wi-Fi.

So before we jump into the fixes, let’s take a look at some of the most common causes of internet connection issues on your Android phone.

1. The Router Issue

A faulty router is one of the most common causes of internet connection issues. If your router is having problems or not functioning properly, all the connected devices will have problems connecting to the internet.

2. Internet Connection Issue

If your router is working properly, the internet connection could be the issue; especially, if you do not have a reliable internet connection. In this situation, your Android mobile will connect to the Wi-Fi but it won’t have access to the internet.

Now, you also need to factor in bad weather, maintenance issues, broken cables, etc. Basically, you need to consider any issues that can originate from the Internet Service Provider’s side.

Speaking of internet connection issue, here’s what you need to do if you ever get the internet may not be available on Android.

3. IP Address Issue

The issue with the IP address is very rare but it happens nonetheless. The IP address issue is basically a conflict between the devices connected to the same network that was granted the same IP address.

Due to this mistake, your Android mobile won’t receive the correct data. Hence, cutting you off from the internet completely. This only happens if the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is not working.

4. DNS Issue

Most people aren’t aware of DNS or Domain Name System. But it is an integral part that essentially interprets the website URLs for an IP.

If the DNS server is experiencing a problem, you won’t be able to connect to the internet. However, this rarely happens.

Fixing Android Connected to Wi-Fi, But No Internet

Now that you know why your Android smartphone is connected to a Wi-Fi network but you can’t access the internet, it’s time for the fixes.

You should note that if your Internet Service Provider is the culprit (ISP), there’s nothing you can do other than wait until they fix the problem. However, if the problem is on your end, the tips below should help you regain internet connection access on your Android phone.

Go through the troubleshooting tips below in order until you find the one that fixes your internet issue problem.

1. Restart the Router

Let’s begin with the router. It is a complex device but sometimes restarting is just enough to fix minor issues.

A router restart is very simple. You can just disconnect it from the power source and then connect it after a few seconds. If restarting your router didn’t fix the problem, move on to the next solution.

2. Turn Off Mobile Data

There are times when we have both Wi-Fi and Mobile Data enabled on our smartphones and usually, that doesn’t create any conflicts. Android OS is smart enough to distinguish one from the other.

Still, there are certain situations when enabling both of these options at the same time could prove to be problematic. It will create a lot of network-centered issues, resulting in no internet access.

So, when you’re facing an internet connection issue with your Android phone that’s connected to Wi-Fi, disabling mobile data would be your best option.

Deactivating mobile data on Android is very simple. Just tap on the Mobile Data option on the Quick Access Panel of your Android mobile to disable it.

3. Date & Time Settings

Incorrect dates & times can cause a lot of issues with your Android mobile. It may sound like something trivial but when you are having trouble connecting to the internet, checking the date and time on your mobile would be a good idea. If you find them to be incorrect, fix them immediately.

1. Launch the Settings app on your Android mobile.

2. Scroll down and locate General Management (This may be different depending on the smartphone you are using and the OS version).

The date and time on your Android mobile will be fixed after enabling this feature. Now, it is time to check if you can access the internet via Wi-Fi or not.

4. Forget the Wi-Fi Network and Rejoin Forgotten Wi-Fi Network

Forgetting the saved Wi-Fi network and rejoining it to your Android mobile is a simple fix and quite effective as well.

Although the steps are pretty simple, you still might struggle to rejoin the Wi-Fi network. When the prompt appears, asking you to enter the Wi-Fi password.

Most people just forget their home Wi-Fi password. Once the setup is finished, you are never asked for it and your device will get connected automatically.

So, be sure to acquire the necessary password before executing this method. After that, it’s very simple.

1. Open the Settings app on your Android mobile and tap on Connections

2. Under Connections, select Wi-Fi. Then, tap on the Gear Shaped Icon beside your saved Wi-Fi network.

3. A new panel will open, tap on the Forget option below.

You’ve successfully made your Android phone forget your Wi-Fi network. Your phone won’t automatically connect to the network when it’s in range.

So, reboot the device and return to the Wi-Fi settings. Tap the network name and enter the password. If you still can’t access the internet after rejoining the network, don’t worry, we’ve got more fixes for you to try.

5. Change Router Wireless Mode

You could be using an incompatible wireless mode on your router. It could be responsible for the Android mobile connected to Wi-Fi, but no internet issue.

Modern routers are equipped with multiple wireless modes. Each mode comes with different bandwidth. The most common ones are 802.11b; 802.11b/g and 802.11b/g/n. The letters indicate different standards for wireless.

Now, the default wireless mode is 802.11b/g/n. This wireless mode works properly with all modern Android devices. But some of the old devices are not compatible.

So, if you are having this issue due to your smartphone being old, you just need to change the wireless mode.

  • Run the software for the Wi-Fi router on your computer.
  • Under Wireless Settings, select the Wireless Mode option.
  • There will be a few options visible in the drop menu; select 802.11b and click Save

After changing the mode, reboot the router and connect the Android device to access the internet. If this doesn’t work, you can try changing the wireless mode to 802.11g

6. Reset Network Settings

Resetting the network settings on your smartphone would be a pretty drastic move, but if it can help fix your internet connection issue on your Android, it’s worth giving it a shot.

Keep in mind, you will lose all your previous joined network preferences. This means you’ll need to re-enter the network credentials for secured Wi-Fi networks. Here’s how to reset your Android phone’s network settings:

1. Tap on the Settings app on your Android device.

2. Scroll down and tap on General Management (This option will be different depending on the smartphone you’re using and the OS version).

3. Under General Management, tap on Reset.

5. Finally, in the following panel, tap on the Reset Settings button to reset your Android phone network settings.

This method is easy enough. Just remember to set your network preferences again and try connecting to the internet. You should be successful.

7. Change DNS

Lastly, you can change DNS if you are still with the same issue. But only use this as the last resort, and if you know what you’re doing.

Changing the DNS is a complex task. So, it should be left to the professionals. But there are times when you may have to do it yourself to solve an issue, which is your current situation. So, go through the following steps very carefully.

The task is simple. You only need to change the IP address to Google DNS (8.8.8.8; 8.8.4.4) and that should get rid of the problem.

1. Launch the Settings app on your Android mobile and tap on Connections

2. Under Connections, tap on Wi-Fi and then tap on the Gear Shaped Icon beside your network.

3. In the following panel, tap on Advanced to extend the menu.

4. Tap on the IP Settings and change it to Static
