Skipping 2 iPhone Upgrades Usually Doesn’t Feel Like Much, but Apple’s New A20 Pro Chip Could Make This Year Different

Apple introduced the A20 Pro chip at its September 9 event, making the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max the first smartphones to use 2-nanometer process technology.

The smaller manufacturing process lets more transistors fit on the chip, which translates directly into faster performance and better energy efficiency than prior generations.

CPU and GPU Gains

The A20 Pro uses a 6-core CPU design anchored by two new high-performance cores that Apple claims run up to 20% faster than those in the A19 Pro, describing them as “desktop-class” and “the fastest in any smartphone.”

Four efficiency cores handle lighter tasks. The GPU has been rebuilt with a 7-core layout delivering up to 40% faster graphics performance and higher memory bandwidth than the previous generation.

Apple also expanded the Neural Engine to 32 cores, doubling its compute capacity over its predecessor and adding support for 8-bit floating-point math.

New neural accelerators embedded in the GPU offer twice the FP8 throughput of the A19 Pro, which matters specifically for running large language models directly on the device rather than routing requests to a server.

Apple called the A20 Pro “the ultimate chip for running advanced on-device models” and said it ships with “the widest memory interface we’ve ever shipped in an iPhone.”

Sustained Performance, Not Just Peak Numbers

A chip’s peak benchmarks and its real-world output under sustained workloads can differ substantially, and Apple spent time addressing that gap directly.

The company redesigned the A20 Pro’s silicon packaging, describing it as “custom packaging inspired by our M-series chips” that connects the chip and memory directly to the vapor chamber inside the iPhone 18 Pro for more effective heat dissipation.

Apple compared sustained performance across three generations: the A20 Pro delivers 40% more sustained output than the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro, and twice the sustained performance of the A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro.

That last figure shows how quickly the gap compounds across two chip generations, and it gives users who have held onto an iPhone 16 Pro a concrete benchmark for what the upgrade would feel like during extended tasks like video editing, gaming, or running AI features.

What This Means for AI on iPhone

The doubled Neural Engine compute and the expanded FP8 throughput point toward heavier on-device AI processing.

Apple has been steadily shifting more intelligence features away from cloud processing to run locally, and the A20 Pro is built specifically to support more capable models without a network connection.

The wider memory interface the company highlighted would help the chip move large amounts of data quickly enough to keep those models running smoothly.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to go on sale September 22 alongside updated Mac mini and Mac Studio models also announced at the event.
