Apple is making it harder for iPhone owners to ignore iOS 27, quietly changing the Software Update screen to put its newest operating system front and center.
As of October 8, iOS 27.0.1 now appears as the recommended update for users still running iOS 26, while the latest iOS 26 release has been pushed into a smaller section at the bottom of the screen.
It’s a subtle change that could influence which update people install, especially those who have been holding off on the major upgrade.
iOS 27 Takes Priority
When iOS 27 launched on September 14, Apple kept iOS 26 updates in the prominent position under Settings → General → Software Update.
Anyone wanting to install iOS 27 had to select it from the secondary “Also Available” section.
That arrangement has now been reversed. iOS 27.0.1 appears at the top with the main download option, while iOS 26.7.1 sits farther down the page.
For someone who routinely installs whichever update their iPhone recommends, the newer operating system is now the more obvious choice.
Apple hasn’t explained why it changed the order, although the move comes nearly a month after iOS 27 became publicly available.
You Can Still Stay on iOS 26
If you’re not ready to upgrade, Apple hasn’t removed the option to remain on iOS 26.
Open Settings → General → Software Update and scroll down to the “Also Available” section, where iOS 26.7.1 should appear on eligible devices.
That update includes security fixes, making it the better choice for anyone who wants to postpone iOS 27 while keeping their iPhone protected.
The change also doesn’t mean iOS 27 will automatically install simply because it appears first. Automatic update behavior depends on your device’s settings.
Apple hasn’t released official adoption figures for iOS 27, so it’s unclear how many users have upgraded since September 14.
