Apple released iOS 27.0.1 on Monday, two weeks after iOS 27 launched, with fixes for Face ID problems that have affected the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max since launch.
Face ID can fail when authenticating a locked app, freeze the iPhone, and trigger an unexpected restart.
The iPhone 18 Pro can also display a “Face ID is Not Available” message during setup, while the Require Attention setting hasn’t always worked reliably.
Apple said last week that a software update was coming to address the problems. iOS 27.0.1 is that update.
Face ID isn’t the only fix
Apple’s release notes specifically address the bug that could cause an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max to restart after Face ID failed to authenticate.
The update also fixes a camera issue that could produce a color artifact in photos taken at 2x zoom under certain lighting conditions when using the new f/1.48 aperture.
A third fix addresses a touchscreen freeze that could occur when Notification Center and Control Center were opened at the same time.
The iPhone 18 Pro models are the first iPhones to move the Face ID infrared camera beneath the display instead of keeping it inside a visible cutout.
Apple hasn’t said whether that new hardware contributed to the Face ID problems, so there’s no confirmed connection between the under-display camera and the bugs fixed in iOS 27.0.1.
The update is available now
iOS 27.0.1 is available for every iPhone that supports iOS 27, not just the iPhone 18 Pro models affected by the Face ID problems.
You can install it under Settings > General > Software Update.
Apple also released iPadOS 27.0.1 and visionOS 27.0.1 on Monday.
If you’re still running iOS 26, Apple released iOS 26.7.1 separately. That update patches a security vulnerability that has been actively exploited in targeted attacks.
