After Years of Refusing to Make a Touchscreen MacBook Pro, Apple Finally Did It, but the Price Might Make You Wish It Hadn’t

After years of keeping touchscreens off the Mac, Apple has finally brought touch input to the MacBook Pro.

The redesigned laptops feature OLED displays, thinner bodies, smaller bezels, and a Dynamic Island that replaces the familiar notch. They’re available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, starting at $2,899 and $3,399, respectively.

Pre-orders are open now, with availability beginning November 6.

OLED display supports touch for the first time

Apple’s new PROLED XDR display uses tandem OLED technology, delivering up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness in HDR and SDR, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and adaptive refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz.

An optional nano-texture coating helps reduce glare.

Instead of adding a separate touch layer, Apple integrates the sensors directly into the OLED panel to reduce latency.

You can swipe to scroll, pinch to zoom, and drag items between windows. macOS also translates touch gestures into mouse clicks, allowing most existing apps to respond without developer updates.

A reinforced hinge keeps the screen stable during touch interactions, while video stabilization helps prevent camera shake when tapping the display during calls.

Also: You could spend $1,499 on the new M6 iMac and still be looking at the exact same screen you already have on your M4 model

Dynamic Island replaces the notch

The redesigned MacBook Pro borrows another familiar iPhone feature: Dynamic Island.

It replaces the display notch and provides access to Spotlight, Siri, and Live Activities.

Thinner bezels increase the usable display sizes to 14.2 inches and 16.3 inches, while both laptops are approximately 1mm thinner than their predecessors.

The 14-inch model weighs three pounds, and the 16-inch weighs four pounds.

Apple has also brought back the illuminated Apple logo on the lid, a design feature absent from MacBooks for roughly a decade.

Also: Apple just gave video editors a reason to think twice before spending another dollar on extras they may soon get for free

M5 Pro and M5 Max power the new models

Despite the major redesign, Apple is sticking with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips introduced earlier this year.

The thermal system has been reworked to direct heat away from the OLED panel.

Other hardware highlights include:

  • Up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage.
  • Three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe, and a headphone jack.
  • Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
  • Support for up to four external displays.
  • Six speakers with 50% deeper bass.
  • Fast charging to 50% in 30 minutes.

Also: Your M5 MacBook Pro is barely a year old, and the new $1,999 M6 gives you very little reason to replace a laptop that still works

Pricing and availability

The 14-inch OLED MacBook Pro starts at $2,899, while the 16-inch model starts at $3,399. Both are available to pre-order now and go on sale November 6.

Apple will continue selling its existing mini-LED MacBook Pro models alongside the new OLED versions, including the recently announced M6 14-inch MacBook Pro.

That gives buyers a choice between the more affordable traditional MacBook Pro and the redesigned OLED models, which command a substantial premium for touchscreen functionality and the new display technology.
