While much of the buzz at WWDC 2024 centered around iOS 18’s customizable home screen and Apple Intelligence, Apple also quietly rolled out a significant update for its TV operating system.

I know it’s a bit disappointing that there’s no hardware update, but tvOS 18 is here. Even though it didn’t get much stage time, it brings a suite of features and enhancements that Apple TV enthusiasts will surely appreciate.

Let’s take a look at everything new with tvOS 18 and why you should be excited about it.

Enhanced Viewing Experience with InSight

One of the standout features in tvOS 18 is InSight. This new tool is a must-have for anyone who loves knowing more about what they’re watching.

With a simple tap, InSight provides detailed information about actors, characters, and even the music playing in a scene.

It’s similar to Amazon Prime Video’s X-Ray feature but is seamlessly integrated into the Apple TV ecosystem.

Now, you can satisfy your curiosity about that familiar face or catchy song without leaving your viewing experience.

The Apple TV app also gets smarter with live content. Within the featured preview carousel on the Home screen, you’ll now see live previews of ongoing broadcasts.

This dynamic display makes it easier to jump into live events or shows right from your Home screen.

Crystal Clear Dialogue with Enhanced Features

Apple has significantly upgraded the Enhance Dialogue feature in tvOS 18, ensuring you catch every word spoken, even in the noisiest scenes.

With advanced machine learning algorithms, Enhance Dialogue now delivers superior vocal clarity, cutting through background noise, music, and action sequences.

This improvement extends beyond just the HomePod. It now supports HDMI-connected speakers, AirPods, and any Bluetooth speaker.

Additionally, the Extended Voice Isolation option brings even more accessibility, providing extra clarity during video playback.

Smart Subtitles for More Contexts

Gone are the days of missing out on critical dialogue because of background noise or unexpected interruptions.

tvOS 18 introduces Smart Subtitles, a feature that automatically enables subtitles when you press the mute button or skip back during playback.

This smart system also detects when a show or movie is in a different language from your system’s default and will automatically display subtitles, ensuring you never miss a word.

Embracing the Cinematic with 21:9 Support

For the first time, Apple TV will support the 21:9 aspect ratio with tvOS 18, catering to those who enjoy watching content on projectors.

This widescreen format is ideal for cinematic experiences, bringing the theater into your living room and making those epic movie moments even more immersive.

Apple Fitness+ Is Getting a Facelift

If you’re a fitness enthusiast, you will be pleased with the redesigned Apple Fitness+ app.

tvOS 18 revamps the app’s interface, splitting it into personalized sections: For You, Explore, Library, and Search.

This new layout makes it easier to find your favorite workouts, discover new exercises, and keep track of your fitness journey.

Dedicated Camera for Seamless FaceTime Calls

Building on the capabilities introduced with tvOS 17, tvOS 18 allows you to set a specific iPhone as the dedicated camera for Apple TV.

This means your chosen iPhone will always be ready for use during FaceTime calls, offering a seamless, integrated video calling experience right on your big screen.

Live Captions for FaceTime

Continuing its commitment to accessibility, Apple is bringing Live Captions to FaceTime on Apple TV with tvOS 18.

This feature, already available on iOS, provides real-time transcription of everything said during a FaceTime call, displayed directly on your TV screen.

It’s a significant step forward in making communication more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

New Screensavers Coming to tvOS 18

Apple TV’s aerial screensavers have long been a beloved feature, and tvOS 18 takes them to the next level.

You can now choose from new styles, including Portraits, which combines a slideshow of photos with a clock, and screensavers featuring scenes from Apple TV+ shows. These additions will bring a fresh, dynamic look to your TV when it’s idle.

Bottom Line

While it may not have had the limelight of iOS or macOS updates, tvOS 18 delivers a robust set of enhancements that promise to elevate the Apple TV experience.

From smarter subtitles and enhanced dialogue to new screensavers and a redesigned Fitness+ app, there’s plenty for you to look forward to.
