Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are missing handwashing detection, ending six years of support for a feature Apple introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Apple’s support documentation lists the models that work with handwashing detection, and neither of its newest watches is included.
The feature remains available in watchOS 27 and continues to work on older models, including the Series 11 and Ultra 3.
That means someone upgrading from either of last year’s watches will lose the feature despite moving to newer hardware.
Handwashing detection is still part of watchOS
Apple introduced handwashing detection with watchOS 7 in 2020. It uses the watch’s motion sensors and microphone to recognize when you’re washing your hands.
Then it starts a 20-second countdown to encourage you to keep going for the recommended amount of time. The feature has remained available across successive generations of Apple Watch since then.
It hasn’t disappeared from Apple’s software either. Handwashing remains a tracked category in the Health app on iOS 27.2, while compatible older watches can still detect and record handwashing sessions. The change appears limited to the Series 12 and Ultra 4.
Apple hasn’t explained why
It’s unclear why Apple’s newest watches don’t support a feature available on the models they replace.
The omission could ultimately prove to be an error in Apple’s support documentation, although the company specifically lists compatible Apple Watch models rather than simply saying the feature requires a particular version of watchOS.
There also isn’t enough information to conclude that a hardware change in the Series 12 and Ultra 4 is responsible.
For anyone who still uses handwashing detection, the immediate result is more straightforward: upgrading to either new watch means the automatic 20-second timer and handwashing reminders are no longer available.
Apple hasn’t said whether support could be added to the Series 12 and Ultra 4 in a future watchOS update.
