Apple unveiled “Audio Intelligence” on Wednesday, bringing new microphone features powered by Apple Intelligence to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.
The new capability transcribes conversations on the fly, identifies playing music, and alerts deaf or hard-of-hearing users to key sounds.
What Audio Intelligence does
The most ambitious feature is Siri Recap, which uses the watch’s microphone to listen to ambient conversations and generate a summary with a title and key points, viewable later in the Siri app.
Apple positions it as a way to capture takeaways from a team meeting or a parent-teacher conference without manually taking notes.
A second feature, Live Rewind, lets users double-press the Digital Crown to see a 15-second transcription of whatever was just said in a conversation, useful when someone misses something or needs to clarify what was heard.
The other two features are more focused. Automatic Shazam identification surfaces the title and artist of music playing nearby directly in the Smart Stack, without requiring users to open anything.
Sound Recognition, already available on iPhone, now comes to Apple Watch independently, alerting deaf or hard-of-hearing users to sirens, alarms, doorbells, a baby crying, and similar sounds even when their iPhone is not nearby.
Privacy controls and hardware limits
Apple was direct about the consent question for Siri Recap, describing the feature as opt-in and configurable.
Users can set it to always listen, restrict it to specific contexts like work hours, or disable it entirely from Control Center at any time.
Apple also stated that no Audio Intelligence feature stores audio recordings: raw audio is processed inside an isolated Secure Exclave on the S11 chip and deleted immediately after use.
That explanation has done little to quiet concerns about people near a watch whose owner has enabled ambient transcription.
Several users in early discussions raised the point that consent controls only apply to the person wearing the device, not to anyone else whose words are being processed. Apple has not addressed how bystanders would know transcription is active.
Requirements and availability
Audio Intelligence requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone paired to the watch. Siri Recap and Live Rewind specifically require an iPhone 16 or later, excluding the iPhone 16e.
All four features will launch in beta later this year in English only, with additional languages planned to follow.
The features will not be available at launch in the European Union, continuing Apple’s pattern of withholding Apple Intelligence capabilities from the EU market during initial rollouts.
