I discovered a hidden gem within my iPhone that revolutionized the way my wife and I approach cooking.
How often have you read a recipe online only to find it’s littered with confusing measurement units like cups and ounces?
It’s no big deal, right? You can ask Siri or use Spotlight Search to do the conversion for you. Or you can, you guessed it, “Google it.”
But did you know your iPhone has a handy feature that lets you convert any measurement of units without leaving the browser?
Starting with iOS 16, you can now easily convert currency and measurement units anywhere you can select text.
This hidden feature allows me to make seamless measurement conversions without leaving the recipe page.
No need to switch between apps, which is incredibly convenient and allows me to stay focused when following a detailed recipe.
How to Convert Any Measurement Using Your iPhone
Imagine you stumble upon the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe, but it’s all in the imperial system, and you’ve only ever worked with the metric system.
Here’s how to use your iPhone to convert any measurements right from the browser:
To access the conversion feature, long-press the measurement, which will bring up the regular copy menu.

Then, tap the right arrow twice to reveal a comprehensive list of measurements.

Let’s see another example in Safari on an iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 17.4.1.

For instance, in my example, I quickly found out that 1/4 cup equals 59.15 ml.
The best part is this feature isn’t limited to cooking. You can use it to convert any unit, including currency, distance, temperature, time zones, volume, and weight, all without leaving your browser.
Wrap-Up
Converting units directly in the browser while reading recipes on my iPhone has been a game-changer in our kitchen.
We don’t need to scramble for conversion tools or switch apps. Now, we can tackle new recipes with confidence and ease, no matter how the measurements are listed.

Doesn’t work for me, running Safari on iPhone 15 Pro. Two taps on right arrow do not render said conversion list, only “translate/share/new quick note”. Running iOS 17.4.1
Too bad, this would have been useful.
Hey Marc, sorry to hear that. I updated the article with a screenshot showing the feature working in Safari on an iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 17.4.1.
Since it seems to be working as expected, have you tried refreshing the page or restarting Safari to see if that resolves the issue on your end?
