Apple’s iOS 18.4 Update Adds Hidden Music Shortcuts That Let You Play the Perfect Playlist Instantly From Your Lock Screen
You’ve just updated to iOS 18.4, and like any die-hard Apple fan, you’re probably poking around to see what’s new.
You may already have noticed some subtle tweaks, but one of the best additions isn’t where you’d expect it, hidden outside the Apple Music app.
Apple has quietly introduced Ambient Music controls, a simple yet brilliant way to start playlists based on your mood, without even opening the Music app.
Instead, you can trigger them right from the Control Center, your Lock Screen, or the Action button. It’s a small tweak, but trust me, you won’t want to go back once you start using it.

Right now, iOS 18.4 includes four moods:
- Sleep – Wind down with relaxing melodies.
- Chill – Laid-back tunes for an easygoing vibe.
- Productivity – Beats designed to keep you focused.
- Wellbeing – A playlist to boost your mood.
By default, each mood is linked to an Apple-curated playlist, but you can swap them out for any playlist you like.
Also: Apple’s new Event app is so good, you’ll never want to use Google Calendar for invitation again
So if Apple’s “BEATstrumentals” isn’t your thing for productivity, you can switch it to your go-to work playlist instead.
This feature is peak Apple, effortless and intuitive. Instead of opening the Music app and getting lost in endless choices, you can tap a button and start listening instantly. It’s one of those tiny improvements that makes your iPhone feel smarter.
Apple doesn’t always announce its best new features with fanfare, but this one will come in super handy, especially for music lovers.
Have you tried it yet? Let me know what you think.
