Apple has acknowledged that some iPhone Duo units are developing cracks along their inner displays, confirming a problem that began drawing attention shortly after the foldable went on sale on October 23.
The company says the issue affects a small number of devices and is directing customers who experience display failures to AppleCare for a replacement.
However, limited inventory is already making replacements difficult to obtain in some cases.
In a statement, Apple said:
“The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”
Apple hasn’t identified the cause or announced a hardware fix. The company maintains that the problem is limited in scope, with failures appearing shortly after purchase rather than developing gradually over time.
Cracks are appearing near the hinge
Early complaints describe cracks forming along the lower portion of the inner display, close to the folding mechanism.

Some owners report feeling resistance when opening the phone, while others describe hearing a popping sound before noticing damage.
However, the extent of the problem remains unclear. Some images circulating online appear to be AI-generated, making it difficult to determine how many genuine failures have occurred.
Teardown points to possible hinge interference
A detailed iPhone Duo teardown identified a potential mechanical explanation for the display failures.
The investigation found that several structural components meet near the area where cracks have been reported, creating a possible concentration of stress as the screen folds.

One concern is a central hinge support that may not retract consistently when closing, potentially putting additional pressure on the flexible display.
The findings offer a plausible explanation, but the teardown did not establish a definitive cause, and Apple has not confirmed whether the hinge mechanism is responsible.
For affected customers, AppleCare is the recommended route for obtaining a replacement.
The complication is availability. With iPhone Duo inventory already constrained following its retail debut, some owners may face delays before a replacement device becomes available.
Apple hasn’t provided a timeline for improved replacement stock or indicated whether it plans to change the manufacturing process.
