Apple’s new iPhone Duo, the company’s first foldable iPhone, ships without an Action Button, making it the only iPhone in recent history to lack the customizable physical control that has appeared on every model since the iPhone 15 Pro.
Apple’s official specifications page lists volume up and down buttons, a Camera Control button, and a side button, but no Action Button.
The left side of the device, where the Action Button sits on the iPhone 18 Pro and earlier models, is absent from the diagram entirely.
What users lose
The Action Button can be assigned to a range of functions, including toggling Silent mode, switching Focus modes, activating the flashlight, recording a Voice Memo, launching Visual Intelligence, or triggering a custom Shortcut.
For iPhone Duo owners, none of those will be available as a one-press physical shortcut. Silent mode in particular will require a trip to Control Center rather than a quick button press.
The Duo is also the first iPhone Apple has ever sold with no physical mute option. Previous iPhones shipped with either a traditional mute toggle or, from the iPhone 15 Pro onward, the Action Button configured for Silent mode by default. The Duo breaks that streak entirely.
A different button layout
The iPhone Duo includes a Camera Control button on the right side to launch the camera and capture photos, a feature that debuted with the iPhone 16 lineup.
The side button doubles as a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, since the device does not support Face ID.
That combination of Touch ID and Camera Control, along with the missing Action Button, gives the Duo a distinctly different physical control scheme than any current iPhone Pro model.
Apple has not explained why it left off the Action Button. The foldable form factor presumably creates design constraints on available space along the device’s edges, though the company has not addressed the omission publicly.
Broader implications
The Duo’s button layout also raises a question about the Action Button’s long-term place in the iPhone lineup.
Apple introduced the feature in 2023 and expanded it across all iPhone models in subsequent years, so its absence from a flagship-tier product is a departure from the direction the company had been moving.
For now, the omission applies only to the Duo. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, also announced at Apple’s September 9 event, retain the Action Button in its usual position above the volume controls on the left side.
