Live Activities could soon become more useful on Macs without a Dynamic Island, thanks to a change arriving in macOS Golden Gate 27.3.
Apple has released the first developer beta of macOS Golden Gate 27.3, introducing a new testing cycle just one week after macOS 27.2 became publicly available.
Registered developers can download the beta through System Settings > General > Software Update by selecting the appropriate beta channel.
Live Activities Expand Beyond Dynamic Island
One of the most useful additions in macOS 27.3 is support for displaying Live Activities in the menu bar on Macs without a Dynamic Island.
Live Activities provide ongoing updates from supported apps, allowing users to follow information without repeatedly opening the app itself.
Bringing them to the menu bar means owners of older Macs won’t need Apple’s redesigned touchscreen MacBook Pro to access the feature.
The beta also introduces improved Markdown rendering in Quick Look, making it easier to preview Markdown documents without opening a separate editor.
An important security fix is included as well, although further details about the issue have not been provided.
Apple Intelligence Could Expand to China
Another development worth watching is the potential arrival of Apple Intelligence in China.
The iOS 27.3 beta has already introduced support for Apple’s AI features in the region, following months of regulatory challenges.
Similar changes could eventually reach macOS, although Apple hasn’t confirmed whether Chinese-language Apple Intelligence support is included in the first Golden Gate 27.3 beta.
What Changed in macOS 27.2?
The previous update introduced redesigned brightness and volume controls, expanded Siri AI support to additional languages, including French and Japanese, and addressed an issue involving Rosetta.
Previously, upgrading to macOS 27 could silently remove an existing Rosetta installation. Version 27.2 corrected that behavior, preserving the software for users who still depend on Intel-based Mac applications.
Rosetta remains supported in macOS 27, although Apple plans to phase it out in a future release.
Meanwhile, the broader 27.3 beta cycle includes new StandBy features for iPhone, Reachability support for the iPhone Duo, and strength-training plans in Apple Fitness+.
Apple hasn’t announced a public release date for macOS Golden Gate 27.3. Additional beta versions are expected before the update becomes widely available.
