Router lights can be confusing. One possibility that users sometimes notice is when a Verizon router yellow light begins to flash.

Every light has a different meaning, as does its frequency of display. Figuring out each configuration is the key to dispelling the mystery behind these lights.

A yellow light on a Verizon router can be in one of three states:

  • Blinking: This indicates the connection strength between the router and any WiFi extender used in its pairing.
  • Steady: This indicates the unstable and inconsistent state of an internet connection or where a signal is gaining and then losing strength.
  • Solid: This indicates that the internet connection is missing entirely.

Why Is My Verizon Router Yellow?

The yellow light on your Verizon router indicates that there is a connection issue.

Other reasons for a Verizon router yellow light include the following.

  • Insufficient power supply.
  • Fluctuating internet connection.
  • The router has a hard time connecting to the ISP signal.
  • A bug with the software or firmware of the device.
  • Overall internet outages in the localized Verizon area.

How to Fix a Yellow Light On Verizon Router

If you come across a Verizon router yellow light, you need to reboot the device. If that doesn’t work, continue below as we share several ways to troubleshoot a yellow light on the Verizon router.

1. Restart the Router

The most common fix for most problems with electronics is to simply restart or reboot them. One way to restart a router is to open a web browser and navigate to http://192.168.1.1.

This will be despite your internet potentially being unavailable since it’s a localized IP. After entering your credentials, you should click Advanced from the settings panel and then navigate to Utilities.

There will be a Reboot Router option available, select it, and the router will reset.

Give it a few minutes and check on the state of the light. It should be a steady white light if all things are connected normally.

Most people take a quicker route to a reboot by simply unplugging the router, waiting a minute or 2, and plugging it back in. The initialization protocols will run, and the router light will return.

2. Check for Maintenance or Outage in Your Area

If your Verizon router is under maintenance or there’s an outage in your area that could explain why you see a yellow light on the router.

Verizon service outage

Check the official service outage page for updates on outage in your area. You can also check your router’s official social media account as they usually share live updates about their service with their followers.

If there’s an outage or there’re doing some kind of maintenance, you’ll have to wait until they restore the service or finish the maintenance.

3. Check On the Wiring

A loose wire or an insufficiently plugged-in power source could also be causing the blinking yellow light on a Verizon router.

Make sure that the wall plug is securely in its socket, and inspect the wiring running from the wall jack to the router ensuring there is no moisture, breaks, or frays.

Also, ensure there is no moisture. If any wires are visibly damaged, they will need to be replaced. If moisture is on the wiring, wipe them down with a microfiber cloth.

4. Move Your Router

Being electronic, a router dissipates heat. If it is positioned in an area that does not let it do so properly or efficiently, it might need to be moved as its location could be hindering its performance.

If moved, the router should be repositioned away from any enclosed cabin spaces, heated objects, and out of direct sunlight.

Moving the router from a location that is too hot can dramatically improve your signal and extend the life of the router at the same time.

5. Check for Router Overheating

Sometimes the position of the router is not the only thing that causes bad heat dissipation. Other factors could cause it.

The effect is the same in terms of degrading its performance potential. In this case, the router needs to be allowed to cool down.

This can be done by powering the router down by unplugging it and allowing it to cool off for at least 5 minutes.

You can feel the router, and if it feels cool to the touch, you can connect it back to a power source. Check the light on the router once it is reconnected, and hopefully, the yellow lights will be gone.

Another reason for overheating could be the overloading of a router. These days, a multitude of devices link up to the router.

Multiple people at home with mobile phones, tablets, smart TVs, personal computers, gaming systems, smart home devices, etc. are all connected to it, and most of them tend to be active at once.

Add to that any guests with access to WiFi, and it is easy to see how the router can be overwhelmed.

To alleviate the pressure, try disconnecting some devices not currently using the WiFi and limiting how much is being done. Restart the router and check the lights.

6. Check WiFi Extender

As noted earlier, one of the reasons for a blinking yellow light is an indication of trying to connect to a WiFi extender.

Since routers broadcast their WiFi signal only so far, many people use WiFi extenders to push the signal to further reaches of their residence.

Sometimes the two don’t pair quite as ideally as one would hope, so an attempt to re-pair the two could fix the yellow light issue.

To reset the pairing of the router and extender:

  • Bring the router and extender within proximity of each other
  • Press and hold down the buttons on the front for both of them for 5 to 7 seconds, which will put both into pairing mode
  • The Verizon router should be displaying a blue LED light to indicate that the pairing was successful
  • Place the extender back in its desired position

Now, check the router lighting to make sure the yellow light is gone

7. Check for Router Overloading

You may experience poor or no internet connections if you exceed your router’s bandwidth limit.

To stop router overloading, follow the steps below:

  • Restart your router.
  • Disconnect all the devices connected to the router.
  • Limit how many devices you can connect to the router at the same time.
  • Check for the white light.

You might need to replace your Verizon router with a more powerful router or add a second router in case you need a lot of bandwidth.

8. Firmware Update

If all of the above have not relieved the situations, the firmware of the router may need to be updated.

While Verizon pushes these out automatically periodically, a user can trigger a firmware update if one is available.

Follow these steps to update your router firmware.

  • Head to the Router’s admin web page.
  • Log in to your account.
  • Go to the System Settings section and check for any software or firmware updates.
  • If one is available, download and install it.

Afterwards, restart the router; the yellow light should disappear.

9. Factory Reset the Router

If all else fails, you might need to factory reset the router. It is important to know, however, that this will erase all your settings. Hence, make sure to back up your data before you begin.

To reset your Verizon router, follow these steps:

  • Hold down the red reset button on the back of the Verizon router for about 2 to 5 seconds until the LED router status displays as being ‘off.’
  • As long as there is an adequate internet connection, the router will come back with a blinking white light and, after a bit of time, a stable one.
  • Make sure you browse to confirm connection to the internet is active.

10. Contact Verizon Support

If all of the above proved fruitless, it might be time to contact Verizon support, as there is likely a problem internally with the router itself.

A technician may be sent out to inspect the router to attempt to identify the problem. If they cannot, they will likely replace your router.

Wrap-Up: Verizon Router Yellow Light

Verizon router yellow light is a common but easy to fix issue. Sometimes a simple reboot of your router can fix this problem. Other times, you might need to go a little deeper in your troubleshooting process.

I hope this assisted you in fixing your Verizon router yellow light. If you fixed the problem with any other solution, please let me know in the comments.
