Siri has never quite worked. Apple promised improvements year after year, more context, better responses, but the experience stayed the same.
Meanwhile, assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini raised expectations. Siri still fumbles with basic tasks. That’s not just a design issue. It’s a deeper failure.

That would mark a major change. Apple has spent years developing its own models and systems. It has been said that this approach proves it can build AI on its own terms, private, local, and secure.
But those models aren’t ready. Now, leaders like Craig Federighi and Mike Rockwell seem willing to step back and rethink the plan.
Key decisions lie ahead. How much of Siri would run on outside models? How much control would Apple give up? Would it name its AI partner? And is it willing to pay the high licensing costs to move faster?
These are tough questions. But continuing with underwhelming tools is no longer an option.
The smart move now is clarity. Apple should say it plans to blend top-tier privacy with the best models available, even if they aren’t homegrown. That would buy time to improve its own systems, restore user trust, and take AI seriously.
