Apple continues to expand CarPlay with iOS 26.4, and this update introduces a couple of new features that drivers will likely notice right away.
Beyond the immediate changes, the update also suggests Apple is preparing something bigger for CarPlay in the future.
First up is support for AI voice assistants.
AI Chatbots Hit the Road
With the advent of iOS 26.4, CarPlay users can now interact with AI voice assistants, thanks to Apple’s support for ‘voice-based conversational apps.’
This breakthrough allows popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude to integrate with CarPlay, enabling drivers to interact with these virtual assistants without taking their eyes off the road.
To ensure driver safety, Apple has mandated that these AI apps must open directly to voice mode, eliminating any on-screen text or imagery that could distract drivers.
Although Siri remains the default assistant, the ability to access third-party AI apps marks a significant milestone in CarPlay’s evolution.
Set the Mood with Ambient Music
iOS 26.4 also expands CarPlay’s widget offerings by introducing the Ambient Music widget.
This addition allows users to select mood-based playlists directly from their car’s dashboard, providing a seamless way to enhance their driving environment.
Whether you’re seeking a Chill vibe or need a Productivity boost, the widget offers playlists tailored to your mood.
To get started, navigate to Settings > General > CarPlay > Widgets on your iPhone.
There, you can configure your widget stacks with the new Ambient Music option, mirroring the functionality available on the iPhone Home Screen with iOS 26.4.
A Promising Future: Video in CarPlay
While AI and music enhancements are already in place, anticipation is building for a long-awaited feature: video support in CarPlay.
Originally announced at last year’s WWDC, this feature didn’t make it in the initial iOS 26 release. However, developments during the iOS 26.4 beta cycle suggest that video functionality might soon become a reality.
Don’t be too excited yet, because before this feature rolls out, automakers must approve it for their vehicles, indicating a phased introduction.
