If you’ve ever felt uncomfortable typing your passport number into a website just to prove you’re over 18, Apple may have a solution you’ll actually want to use.
The Digital ID feature sitting inside your Apple Wallet just got a significant upgrade, and it’s one that could save you from sharing more personal information than you need to.
Digital ID showed up in Apple Wallet back in the fall of 2025. The idea was simple: since most US states were moving at a snail’s pace in supporting digital driver’s licenses, Apple decided to build its own alternative.
Any iPhone user with a US passport could set it up and carry a secure digital version of their identity right in their Wallet app.
When it launched, the feature worked at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 airports nationwide. That was a solid start, but Apple made it clear there was more coming, hinting at future acceptance at businesses, apps, and online services.
Apple quietly published a support document explaining a new use case for Digital ID. The page walks users through what to do when an age verification prompt appears while creating a new Apple Account or using Apple services.
According to that document, you might encounter these prompts when signing up for an account, updating your device software, adjusting certain safety settings, or downloading apps rated 18+.

Traditionally, you’d need a driver’s license, government-issued ID, or a credit card to clear those prompts. Passports alone weren’t accepted.
But a Digital ID created from a US passport inside Apple Wallet now qualifies as an approved method. So instead of typing in sensitive details, you can verify your age with just your iPhone.
Setting up Digital ID takes just a few minutes if you have your US passport nearby. And once it’s in your Wallet, you’re covered at airports and now for Apple’s own age checks too.
