One of the biggest changes coming to Genmoji in iOS 27 is also one of the simplest.
Instead of generating a new emoji from scratch every time you want to make a change, Apple now lets you edit an existing Genmoji and refine it step by step.
In previous versions, even a small adjustment often meant starting over with a new prompt.
If you liked a generated emoji but wanted different glasses, clothing, or accessories, the AI would create an entirely new version. With iOS 27, you can modify what you’ve already created without losing the original design.
A More Flexible Creation Process
After generating a Genmoji, users can enter follow-up prompts to make specific changes.
For example, you can ask the system to change colors, add accessories, adjust expressions, or combine additional elements into the design.
Apple also provides suggested edits that can help users continue refining a creation without typing a new prompt from scratch.
The update works whether you start with a text description, a photo from your library, or an existing emoji.
The result is a workflow that feels more consistent with how image-generation tools typically work. Instead of trying to describe everything perfectly in a single prompt, users can make adjustments as they go.
Visual Improvements and Faster Generation
Apple has also updated the visual style of generated emoji.
The default look now more closely matches Apple’s standard emoji set, giving custom creations a more consistent appearance across Messages and other apps. Alternative styles, including sketch-inspired designs, are also available.
The company says Genmoji generation is faster than before and requires less power, which could be particularly helpful for users who create multiple images in a single session.
Part of Apple’s Broader AI Push
The Genmoji changes arrive alongside updates to Image Playground, which gains new image-generation and editing capabilities in iOS 27.
Both features are powered by Apple’s latest Foundation Models, reflecting the company’s broader effort to expand on-device AI tools across its platforms.
While Genmoji remains a niche feature for many users, the new editing system removes one of the biggest limitations of the original version.
Instead of starting over every time you want to make a change, you can now refine a creation until it looks the way you want.
