Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max go on sale September 18, and you’d be forgiven for struggling to tell them apart from last year’s phones.
If you were hoping for a major redesign, Apple kept things looking pretty much the same this year.
Instead, the company focused its upgrades on battery life, raw performance, and camera tweaks, leaving you with familiar-looking Pro iPhones that pack meaningful changes under the hood.
Preorders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time.
The camera gets much more manual
The biggest change for photographers is the new variable-aperture 48MP main camera on both models.
Instead of shooting through a fixed aperture, users can choose between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. That gives photographers more control over light and depth of field, while the wider maximum aperture should help in darker scenes.
Apple is also leaning further into manual photography elsewhere. New Pro controls add shutter speed, white balance and a histogram directly to the Camera app, while time-lapse video can now be recorded in 4K Dolby Vision HDR.
It’s one of the clearest signs yet that Apple wants the Pro camera to behave less like a traditional point-and-shoot phone camera.
Apple’s first 2nm iPhone chip
Behind those camera features is the A20 Pro, Apple’s first iPhone chip built on a 2-nanometer process.
It uses a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and 32-core Neural Engine, with Apple claiming up to 20% faster CPU performance and 40% faster graphics than the A19 Pro.
Apple also redesigned the vapor chamber that keeps the chip cool, tripling its surface area compared with last year’s system.
That matters less for quick bursts of speed than it does for keeping performance from dropping during longer gaming sessions, video exports, and other demanding workloads.
The Pro Max gets the bigger battery win
Battery life improves on both phones, but the Pro Max sees the more noticeable jump.
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max for up to 15% longer offline video playback than its predecessor. Charging is quicker as well, reaching 50% in 15 minutes instead of the previous 20.
Some models also use Apple’s new C2 cellular modem, which consumes 15% less energy while improving upload speeds. U.S. versions equipped with the C2 support mmWave 5G.
A few smaller changes round things out
Apple has slightly shrunk the Dynamic Island, which can now display up to three Live Activities at once.
The standard iPhone 18 Pro also gains a 2TB storage option for the first time, matching the Pro Max.
Burgundy, Black, and Glacier replace last year’s color choices, with Orange disappearing from the lineup. Apple has also done a better job matching the aluminum camera area with the Ceramic Shield glass on the back.
None of those changes radically alters the iPhone Pro formula. This year, Apple has instead put most of its work into the parts you won’t immediately see, with the variable-aperture camera and A20 Pro chip doing most of the heavy lifting.
