Apple May Finally Fix One of the MacBook Pro’s Longest-Running Problems, and It Could Make the 16-Inch Model Much Easier to Live With

Apple’s upcoming OLED MacBook Pro models could address one of the lineup’s longest-running compromises: weight.

The new laptops will be “significantly lighter” after Apple reworked much of the internal design, according to a new Bloomberg report. Components have reportedly been miniaturized and rearranged inside the chassis to make the machines easier to carry.

That could be particularly noticeable on the 16-inch model. The current 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs as much as 4.7 pounds, compared with 3.3 pounds for the MacBook Air and 2.7 pounds for the MacBook Neo. Even a modest reduction would be noticeable for anyone regularly carrying one in a backpack.

Apple is reworking more than the display

The internal changes arrive alongside what is shaping up to be the MacBook Pro’s largest redesign in several years.

The upcoming models are expected to use OLED displays with touchscreen support, replace the familiar display notch with a Dynamic Island-style cutout, and feature a thinner chassis. M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are also expected.

Making the chassis thinner and lighter while retaining the performance, cooling, ports, and battery life expected from a MacBook Pro creates a much more complicated engineering problem than simply swapping LCD panels for OLED.

Miniaturizing and rearranging components inside the laptop would give Apple more room to reduce its physical footprint without simply removing hardware.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro stands to benefit most. Its larger display and performance make it attractive as a desktop replacement, but at up to 4.7 pounds, carrying it every day comes with a noticeable penalty compared with Apple’s thinner laptops.

The OLED MacBook Pro could arrive this fall

Apple is currently targeting October or November for the new MacBook Pro models, with testing underway on machines running macOS 27.2.

That puts the OLED transition potentially only weeks away and would bring several major MacBook Pro changes at once rather than stretching them across multiple generations.

How much weight Apple has actually managed to remove remains unknown. Battery capacity will also be worth watching once the machines arrive, particularly if Apple is simultaneously making the chassis thinner.

For 16-inch MacBook Pro owners, shaving meaningful weight from a computer they carry every day could end up being every bit as noticeable as the move to OLED.
