Updating to watchOS 27 quietly removes a Digital Crown shortcut that many Apple Watch users relied on daily, and owners of older models get the worst of the change: they lose the feature without gaining anything to replace it.
In watchOS 26, double-clicking the Digital Crown switches between the current app and the previously used one, or between the watch face and the last active app. It’s a quick way to jump between apps without navigating the small display.
After updating to watchOS 27, that behavior is gone. A double-click now opens the dynamic app grid, which is where a single click already takes you.
The shortcut is making room for Live Rewind
The change appears to be tied to Live Rewind, a new Audio Intelligence feature coming to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.
Live Rewind captures a transcript of spoken audio the watch picked up during the previous 15 seconds and triggers when you double-click the Digital Crown.
But the feature is exclusive to Apple’s new watches, while the Crown change applies to older models running watchOS 27. That’s where the decision gets frustrating for existing Apple Watch owners.
A Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, or Ultra 3 can’t use Live Rewind, yet watchOS 27 still removes the app-switching shortcut. On those watches, double-clicking the Crown simply duplicates the app grid action already assigned to a single click.
The difference is especially noticeable when you switch between apps often. During a workout, for example, switching between a workout app and music used to take a quick double-click without much attention. Now it means returning to the app grid and selecting the other app on screen.
New Apple Watches have their own complication
Series 12 and Ultra 4 owners don’t immediately benefit from the change either.
Live Rewind isn’t available at launch, so those watches still open the app grid on double-click. Once Live Rewind arrives, the gesture will be used to trigger its 15-second audio transcription feature.
There’s also no option to choose between the two behaviors. Users who don’t want Live Rewind can’t assign the Digital Crown double-click back to app switching, and Apple hasn’t provided another gesture to replace the old shortcut.
That makes this less about Apple moving a feature somewhere else and more about removing a small but useful piece of watchOS multitasking.

There’s no way to restore it
Apple currently offers no toggle to bring back the previous behavior on any watch running watchOS 27.
A configurable Digital Crown option would solve much of the problem by letting users decide whether a double-click opens Live Rewind, switches apps, or does something else, but watchOS 27 doesn’t offer that flexibility.
For now, anyone who used the Crown to bounce between two apps will have to change how they navigate their watch. On older models especially, that’s a loss of functionality with no new feature to replace it.
