Apple Will Give You Free AirPods Pro 3, But There’s One Rule That Catches Everyone Off Guard

Apple launched a promotion this week in which new Apple Card applicants can effectively recoup the full $249 cost of the AirPods Pro 3 through cash rebates.

The earbuds came out last September alongside the iPhone 17 lineup, and this is the first time Apple has dangled them as a signup incentive.

Sounds great on the surface, and honestly, it can be, but the structure is much more like a phone carrier installment plan than a simple gift.

What You Actually Have to Do

The math works out to $25 back every month, for up to ten months, starting July 1 and running through April 2027.

To unlock each monthly payment, you need to make at least ten separate card purchases that month. Each one just has to be a penny or more, so technically, ten cups of coffee covers it. Miss a month, and you just lose that $25 slice, no penalty, but no recovery either.

To even qualify, you need to open a brand new Apple Card account and buy the AirPods Pro 3 directly from Apple before June 15.

That means apple.com or a physical Apple Store only. Refurbished units and third-party retailers do not qualify.

You also cannot pay entirely with an Apple Gift Card or store credit. Returning the headphones after purchase could wipe out the offer entirely.

Who This Actually Works For

If you were already planning to open an Apple Card and you use it regularly for everyday spending, 10 transactions a month is almost nothing.

People who pay for coffee, groceries, or gas with a card will hit that threshold without thinking about it. For that person, this is genuinely a free pair of earbuds stretched across ten months.

Existing Apple Card holders get nothing here, which has predictably annoyed people who have carried the card for years.

The promotion is completely off-limits to anyone with a current account or even a pending application.

Apple is not subtle about this being a new customer-acquisition play, not a loyalty reward. Whether that bothers you probably depends on whether you were already thinking about signing up.
