Apple TV is getting two useful upgrades with iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 next week, including user profiles on iPhone and iPad and built-in sign language support for select movies and shows.
Both additions address longstanding limitations of Apple’s streaming service, particularly for families sharing devices and viewers who rely on sign language.
Apple TV Profiles Finally Come to iPhone and iPad
Unlike Netflix and other major streaming services, Apple TV has never supported multiple user profiles on iPhone and iPad.
That changes with the upcoming software updates, which bring the profile system already available on Apple TV hardware to Apple’s mobile devices.
Each person can have their own viewing experience, including:
- Watch history: Keeps previously watched movies and shows separate.
- Up Next queue: Tracks what each person is watching without mixing everyone’s progress.
- Personalized recommendations: Suggests content based on the selected profile’s viewing habits.
Profiles also sync across devices, so switching from an iPhone to an iPad or Apple TV won’t affect viewing progress.
For families, child profiles restrict browsing to age-appropriate content. Apple is also introducing new profile pictures featuring characters from The Snoopy Show, Frog and Toad, and Stillwater.
There is one potential annoyance. Users may encounter a profile selection screen when opening the app, adding an extra step for people who never share their devices.
Sign Language Support Arrives for Select Titles
The second addition makes Apple TV more accessible to viewers who use American Sign Language (ASL) or British Sign Language (BSL).
Instead of relying solely on subtitles or closed captions, supported movies and shows will offer video-based sign language interpretation.
The feature can convey expressions and tone that written captions don’t always capture.
To enable it, open Settings > Apps > TV > Sign Language
From there, you can select the available sign language option for supported content.
Apple hasn’t disclosed how many movies or shows will offer the feature initially, so availability will depend on the title.
Both improvements are expected to arrive next week with iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2.
Apple TV currently costs $14.99 per month as a standalone subscription and is also available through Apple One.
