Apple is overhauling how you access Siri and notifications in iOS 27. The top-center swipe now opens Siri AI, while Notification Center shifts to the upper-left corner for the first time since the iPhone debuted.
The change only takes effect when Siri AI is enabled. With Siri AI turned off, opening Notification Center works exactly as it always has.
But once a user activates Siri AI, swiping down from the middle of the top edge no longer pulls up alerts. That gesture now launches the new Siri experience instead. Notifications are still reachable, just from the top-left corner only.
A Smaller Target for Notifications
The practical effect depends on which device you use. On iPad in particular, the early beta gave Siri AI almost the entire top strip of the display, leaving a noticeably compressed zone for Notification Center on the left side.
Apple adjusted this in the second iPadOS 27 beta, creating a more balanced split: roughly two app-column widths on the left for notifications, a similar width on the right for Control Center, and the broad middle stretch dedicated to Siri.
For iPhone users who have always swiped down from somewhere near the middle of the screen to check alerts, the adjustment requires retraining a reflex that has been consistent since iOS 5 launched in 2011. That is a long time for a gesture to go unchanged.
No Option to Reverse It
There is currently no setting to keep the old Notification Center swipe while still using Siri AI. Users who want Siri AI active have to accept the new gesture layout.
The only workaround is to avoid swiping from the center and retrain toward the left edge. Apple has not indicated whether a toggle will appear before the fall release.
This follows a pattern Apple established with iPhone X, when Control Center moved from a bottom swipe to a top-right corner gesture.
That transition also required users to relearn a deeply ingrained behavior, and Apple eventually standardized it across all devices.
The Notification Center shift in iOS 27 follows a similar logic, subordinating an older navigation pattern to make room for a newer feature Apple is actively promoting.
iOS 27 is currently in public and developer beta. The official release is scheduled for early September. If you want to evaluate the gesture change before then, you can access it through the public beta program without a developer account.
