Apple is adding a dedicated view to the Photos app in iOS 27 that shows only photos and videos captured with the iPhone camera, filtering out screenshots, saved images, and anything shared by other people.
The feature is called Captured by Me. It collects every photo and video shot through the Camera app into one place, separate from the rest of the library.
If a friend texted you a photo, it will not appear there. If you took a screenshot, that stays out too. Only media you personally recorded with the camera makes the cut.
Why Your Photos Library Became So Difficult to Navigate
Over time, Apple Photos has absorbed content from multiple sources. Shared albums, iMessage attachments, saved web images, and screenshots all end up in the same library as your actual photos.
The existing Recents album mixes all of that together by date, making it harder to locate a specific shot from a trip or a family dinner without scrolling past content you never personally created.
Apple did have a Camera Roll feature in older versions of iOS. It behaved differently from Recents and predated the current library structure. That view disappeared years ago, and nothing replaced it with the same level of precision.
Two Ways to Access the Same Filter
In iOS 27, Captured by Me appears as a dedicated collection inside Photos. It sits alongside other collections users already browse regularly.
Apple also built the same capability into the main library as a filter, so users can toggle it on without leaving their primary view.
Both options display identical content. The collection and the filter pull from the same set of camera-originated media. Users who prefer browsing the full library can apply the filter temporarily. Those who want a permanent, clean view can go directly to the collection.
Captured by Me arrives as part of a broader Photos update in iOS 27, which also includes changes to slideshows and shared albums.
The iOS 27 update is currently in beta and is expected to reach all compatible iPhones later this year.
