5 Things Apple Changed in the New AirTag 2 That Make Finding Lost Items Faster and Less Stressful

After a long wait, Apple’s AirTag 2 is finally here. At first glance, it looks exactly like the original, which is very much the point.

Apple did not reinvent the AirTag. Instead, it focused on making the experience faster, louder, and more reliable in the moments that actually matter.

If you already rely on AirTags to keep track of your keys, bags, or luggage, these are the five upgrades you will notice most.

1. 2nd Gen Ultra Wideband Chip (UWB 2)

The biggest improvement sits quietly inside. AirTag 2 uses Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip.

This is the same class of technology found in newer iPhones and Apple Watches, and it immediately makes Precision Finding more responsive.

When you start tracking something nearby, the connection locks in faster and feels more confident, especially indoors.

Also: Your iPhone is getting a privacy feature that prevents carriers from tracking your location without draining your battery

2. Longer Range

That new chip also unlocks a longer Precision Finding range. Apple says you can now locate an AirTag from up to one and a half times farther away than before.

In real life, that means fewer moments where the Find My app tells you to move closer before it will help. Large airports, parking garages, and busy offices are where this improvement shines.

Also: Apple secretly built this Siri shortcut years ago, but 99% of iPhone owners don’t know it can double their productivity instantly

3. Precision Finding on Watch

One of the most welcome changes is support for Precision Finding on Apple Watch. If you have an Apple Watch Series 9 or a newer Ultra model, you can now track down an item directly from your wrist.

It sounds small, but it feels surprisingly natural once you try it, especially when your phone is not in your hand.

Also: Your iPhone has a hidden built-in feature that lets you create real PDFs in 5 seconds without using a third-party app

4. Louder Speaker

Apple also made the AirTag easier to hear. The built-in speaker is up to 50 percent louder, making it much easier to pinpoint something hiding under a couch cushion or buried in a bag.

This also helps with Apple’s ongoing anti-stalking efforts since the sound is harder to ignore or block.

5. Better Bluetooth

Rounding things out is improved Bluetooth performance. AirTag 2 uses a newer Bluetooth standard with better range, which helps your devices detect it more reliably before Precision Finding even kicks in.
