If You’ve Never Tried Apple’s Sports App, This New Soccer Upgrade Might Finally Give You a Good Reason

Apple updated its Sports app on Monday with seven new soccer leagues and a formation-viewing feature that works across most leagues in the app, arriving one day after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

The addition brings fans of European and Asian club football into the app for the first time at this level of coverage.

Supporters of clubs in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, Scotland, Poland, and Japan can now track matches, scores, and lineups directly in Apple Sports rather than switching to a third-party app.

What Changed in Version 4.2

The update, version 4.2, adds the Eredivisie, Belgian Pro League, Superliga, Swiss Super League, Scottish Premiership, Ekstraklasa, and J1 League.

Alongside the new leagues, the app now displays team formations for most soccer competitions it covers, letting users see starting lineups laid out on a pitch graphic before and during matches.

Formation data is the kind of detail that used to require opening a dedicated football app or visiting a separate website before a match. Having it in Apple Sports reduces the number of steps for fans who already use the app to follow scores.

Still iPhone Only

Apple Sports remains an iPhone-exclusive app. Users on iPad or Mac cannot access it, which limits its reach compared to browser-based score trackers that work on any device. Apple has not announced plans to expand the app to other platforms.

The timing of the update follows a month in which soccer had an unusually large audience in the United States, with the World Cup final drawing viewers across multiple platforms.

Apple has been gradually widening the app’s league coverage since launch, though several major leagues and lower divisions, including England’s Championship and League One, are still absent.

For fans whose clubs now appear in the app, the update means scores, standings, and lineup information are available inside a native iPhone app with no account required and no ads. The app is free and updates automatically through the App Store.
