Apple is working on a new iPhone camera feature that could let users prove a photo was captured by a real camera rather than generated by AI.
Called Apple Reference Image, the system surfaced in a privacy disclosure included with iOS 27 beta 5.
The feature isn’t active yet, but the documentation provides a detailed look at how Apple plans to authenticate images and protect the original photo in the process.
How Reference Mode Works
Reference Image would start at the moment a photo is taken. When Reference Mode is enabled in the Camera app, the iPhone would attach provenance information to the image, creating a record that can later be used to establish where it came from.
Verification would happen through a Reference badge attached to the photo. Tapping it would send information including the original image data, sensor signatures, capture time, and hardware identifiers to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system.
The system would determine whether the image came from a genuine camera sensor, assign it a unique identifier, and return an authenticated version to the iPhone.
Apple’s privacy disclosure makes an important distinction here: the company says its servers receive sensor information, a hash, and the results of the authentication process, but not the photo itself.
That keeps the actual image outside Apple’s servers while still allowing the company to verify the hardware that captured it.
Apple also appears to have built a way to deal with compromised hardware. If a camera sensor is later determined to be untrustworthy, Apple can refuse to authenticate new images from it and revoke previous authentications associated with that sensor.
Once authenticated, the images can be checked across Apple’s devices, including iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Who It’s Built For
The requirement to capture an image in Reference mode is significant. Apple isn’t simply trying to determine whether a finished photo looks real. It is establishing a chain of trust that begins with the camera hardware.
That makes the feature particularly relevant to photographers, journalists, and other users who need to establish that an image is authentic.
Apple’s documentation also refers to photos and videos and specifically mentions uncropped footage. That leaves open the possibility that the system could eventually authenticate video as well.
The timing is notable as generative AI makes it increasingly difficult to tell a genuine photograph from a synthetic one simply by looking at it.
Image generators can now produce convincing scenes, while editing tools can make substantial changes to real photographs with very little effort.
Camera manufacturers and technology companies have responded by moving authentication closer to the point of capture.

Apple’s Approach Versus the Open Standard
Apple’s approach has some similarities to C2PA, the open standard already being used by companies including Leica, Sony and Nikon to attach Content Credentials to digital images. Google has also adopted C2PA for its Pixel 10 lineup.
The important difference is what happens during verification. C2PA can use services that process the image itself, while Apple’s system is designed around Private Cloud Compute and keeping the original photo away from Apple’s servers.
The iPhone can send the information needed to establish authenticity without handing Apple the image being verified.
Apple’s system also appears designed to address a problem that becomes harder once an authentic image is edited.
A photo can start with legitimate credentials and then be altered using an AI tool, making the original provenance less useful unless the subsequent changes can also be tracked.
Reference Image could give Apple a way to tie authentication to the physical camera sensor itself rather than relying solely on information attached to the resulting file.
There is no indication yet that Apple is ready to ship the feature. Reference Image appears in the iOS 27 beta 5 documentation but remains inactive, while iOS 27 is expected to arrive in September.
