A teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro Max has confirmed an unusual difference between models sold in the United States and everywhere else: U.S. buyers are getting a Qualcomm modem instead of Apple’s new C2.
Research firm TechInsights found Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 inside the U.S. version of the Pro Max, making it the only iPhone 18 model that doesn’t use Apple’s own modem worldwide.
The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and new foldable iPhone Duo both use the C2 globally. Apple also puts the C2 inside the Pro Max sold outside the United States, leaving the U.S. version as the lone holdout.
The Snapdragon X80 itself isn’t new to the iPhone. Apple used it in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max last year, so U.S. buyers aren’t getting an untested or unfamiliar modem.
It also includes a new Apple-designed mmWave antenna module to connect to the high-frequency 5G networks deployed by U.S. carriers.
Why is the U.S. Pro Max different?
Apple hasn’t explained why one version of one iPhone still relies on Qualcomm while the rest of its flagship lineup has moved to the C2.
The two companies have some relevant history. Qualcomm announced in 2023 that it would continue supplying Apple with Snapdragon 5G modem systems for smartphone launches through 2026, giving Apple time to develop and roll out its own modem technology.
Since then, Apple has gradually replaced Qualcomm hardware rather than switching all at once.
The C2 is its most capable modem yet and, importantly, now supports mmWave 5G in the United States. That removes one of the major technical advantages Qualcomm’s modems previously held over Apple’s C1 and C1X.
Apple says the C2 also uses 15% less power than the C1X while delivering significantly faster upload speeds.
None of that explains why the U.S. Pro Max still gets the Snapdragon X80, however. Apple hasn’t said whether the decision comes down to supply, its Qualcomm agreement, or another technical consideration.
Will U.S. buyers notice?
You probably won’t notice that without direct testing. The Snapdragon X80 already powered last year’s iPhone 17 Pro Max, and there’s no indication that its presence puts the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max at an obvious disadvantage.
What remains unknown is how it compares with Apple’s C2 inside this year’s hardware. Battery efficiency, upload speeds, reception, and performance on congested networks could expose differences that aren’t apparent from the specifications alone.
Direct testing between the two versions of the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be needed to determine whether any of those differences are noticeable in everyday use.
