The protective layer covering the iPhone Duo‘s foldable inner display can be peeled off and replaced if it wears out or gets damaged, giving owners a way to refresh the surface without replacing the entire display.

Apple confirmed the replaceable design ahead of the phone’s October 23 launch. The nano-texture cover sits above the flexible display and helps minimize the appearance of the crease running down the middle when the iPhone Duo is unfolded.

Apple spent significant engineering effort making the layer durable, but it also designed it with replacement in mind if its condition deteriorates over time or the crease becomes more noticeable.

AppleCare+ replacements cost $19

Apple lists replacement of the iPhone Duo’s display cover layer at $19 for customers with AppleCare+ in the United States. The company hasn’t disclosed what the same service will cost without coverage.

It’s also unclear whether owners will be able to peel off and install a new layer themselves. Apple describes the layer as replaceable, but hasn’t said whether replacements will be sold directly to customers or require service through Apple or an authorized repair provider.

That distinction could make a considerable difference over several years of ownership. A replaceable top layer could let scratches, wear, or other surface damage be addressed relatively cheaply without touching the expensive flexible OLED panel underneath, especially for customers already paying for AppleCare+.

The inner display is designed to be serviced differently

Traditional iPhone displays put durable cover glass above the OLED panel, but foldable screens need a surface flexible enough to bend repeatedly around the hinge.

The iPhone Duo uses a multilayer display structure, with the replaceable nano-texture layer forming the surface users actually touch.

Making that outer layer replaceable gives Apple another way to deal with wear on a part of the phone that will be folded, unfolded, and touched thousands of times over its life.

It also means visible surface deterioration doesn’t necessarily mean the entire foldable display has reached the end of its useful life.

How straightforward that replacement will be remains unknown. Apple hasn’t detailed the service procedure or announced the price for customers without AppleCare+, two details that will determine whether the replaceable layer is a minor maintenance item or a more expensive repair.

iPhone Duo preorders open October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific, before the phone reaches stores on October 23.
